  1. Module 4: Traffic Laws Part 1: Lanes and Turns Melissa Boggs

  2. Objectives • Students will state the laws regarding single and multiple lane roads • Students will be able to know what do in a situation with slow traffic or emergency vehicles • Students will know the laws regarding right and left hand turns

  3. Lanes • Watch This! • Keep to the right! Unless you are: • Passing another vehicle going the same direction • On a road with 3+ lanes • Driving on a one-way road • Directed by a police offer to drive in another lane • Driving on a road with an obstruction

  4. Opportunity to Respond! • True or False: • You are on a 4-lane road and your destination is on the left. It is okay to drive in the left lane.

  5. TRUE! Because the road had more than one lane traveling in one direction, it is okay to drive in the left lane.

  6. Multiple Lane Roads • Watch This! • When a road has four or more lanes, or when traffic is moving in two more continuous lines at the same direction, the following rules apply: • Stay in the same lane if possible • You should not switch lanes until it’s determined it can be done safely; use turn signal

  7. Opportunity to Respond • True or False: • It is legal to change multiple lanes at the same time if there are no cars nearby.

  8. False! You must change lanes one at a time.

  9. Reasons for Failing Skills Test • Unsafe Lane Changes • Watch This! • What can you do to avoid this?

  10. Opportunity to Respond • When changing lanes you should always…. • 1. Turn on signal • 2. Check your mirror for cars • 3. ____________________ • 4. Make the lane change

  11. 3. check your blind spots!!

  12. Slow Traffic • Vehicles moving slower than traffic flow should stay in the right hand lane

  13. Yielding to Emergency Vehicles • Fire trucks, police cars, ambulances • When an emergency vehicle with flashing lights/siren the driver must get in the right lane and stop. • Be sure to not block intersection • You must remain in this position until the vehicle has passed • If an emergency vehicle is pulled over, you should reduce speed and change lanes (if you can safely)

  14. Opportunity to Respond • How do you know that a vehicle is an emergency vehicle?

  15. Flashing Lights • Siren

  16. Reasons for Failing Skills test • Failure to Yield • Watch This! • How can you avoid this?

  17. Intersections • Watch This! • Things to Remember: • Cars in the intersection have the right of way • If two cars arrive at the same time at a 4-way stop, the car on the right has the right of way • Treat round-about like an intersection • ALWAYS check to see if cross traffic stops

  18. Opportunity to Respond • True or False: You are approaching a flashing red stop light. Once you come to a complete stop, you can proceed.

  19. Roundabouts • Watch this

  20. As long as there was no on-coming traffic. You may not know if the traffic had a flashing red or yellow light.

  21. Turns • Right Turns: • Turn right as close as possible to the right hand curb or edge of the road Right turn on red • It is legal in Ohio to turn right after stopping at a stop light when: • There is no sign posted saying ‘no turn at red’ • You have completely stopped and allowed crossing traffic and pedestrians pass • It is safe to turn

  22. Turns • Left Turn • Is traffic moving in both directions? • If yes, you should make the turn in the lane closest to the center. • Is the intersection marking a one-way? • Turn in the furthest left lane • You must wait for oncoming traffic to clear • Left on Red • It is sometimes legal to turn left at a red light. • One-way street

  23. Opportunity to Respond • True or False: • The same laws apply to right and left hand turns.

  24. False. • Right hand turns can usually be made on red lights, but left usually cannot. • Right hand turns have the right of way, left do not.

  25. Turns • Watch This! • Remember: A turn signal must used at least 100 feet before the intended turn

  26. Reasons for Failing Skills Test • Illegal Left Turn • Watch This! • What can you do to avoid this?
