Methods Workgroup AgendaNWQMC Meeting Durham, NHWednesday July 27th, 2005 • The Problem from a Methods & Data Perspective • Considerations for Field & Lab Measurements • Need for Metadata • Sharing Electronic Data Across Programs • New Technologies • Methods and Data Quality Oversight CHAPTER 5:
The Problem from a Methods & Data Perspective • Different monitoring programs use incompatible methods • Lack of meta data • Unknown data quality • Data & related information are inaccessible
Considerations for Field & Lab Measurements • Use the DQO process • Use methods that will meet your MQOs and in turn satisfy your DQOs (The National Environmental Methods Index database www.NEMI.gov can help with method selection) • Use the Water Quality Data Elements (WQDE) • Seek Accreditation
Need for Metadata • Write your metadata and revise it oftenmetadata should be recorded throughout the life of a data set, from planning, to collection, to analysis, and publication. • Don’t avoid metadata! If you think the cost of producing metadata is too high, you haven’t compiled the costs of NOT creating metadata • NMN – metadata standard …. ?
Sharing Electronic Data Across Programs • Data discovery • Data transport • On-line browse • Data archive • Data standards & protocols = interoperability • Data standards • Metadata standards
New & Innovative Technologies • Use a performance base system approach • Use new technologies that meet DQOs • NMN DQOs vs local and regional DQOs … are they the same? Will new technologies work for both?
Methods & Data Quality Oversight • Method performance within the NMN • Inter-laboratory comparison exercises • Use and development of quality control samples • Adoption of new methods and technologies
