  2. The Problem from a Methods & Data Perspective • Different monitoring programs use incompatible methods • Lack of meta data • Unknown data quality • Data & related information are inaccessible

Considerations for Field & Lab Measurements • Use the DQO process • Use methods that will meet your MQOs and in turn satisfy your DQOs (The National Environmental Methods Index database www.NEMI.gov can help with method selection) • Use the Water Quality Data Elements (WQDE) • Seek Accreditation

Need for Metadata • Write your metadata and revise it oftenmetadata should be recorded throughout the life of a data set, from planning, to collection, to analysis, and publication. • Don’t avoid metadata!If you think the cost of producing metadata is too high, you haven’t compiled the costs of NOT creating metadata • NMN – metadata standard …. ?
