  1. Basic Functions of the Structures of Animals SC Standard 6-3.2  Summarize the basic function of the structures of animals that allow them to defend themselves, to move, and to obtain resources.

  2. What are ADAPTATIONS? Adaptations are special features that enable animals to survive in their environment.

  3. Special Structures for DEFENSE: 1. Hiding Adaptation allow the animal to avoid the predator ex. Camouflage and mimicry

  4. Special Structures for DEFENSE: 2. Flight Adaptation allow an animal to flee from predators and escape danger ex. Birds have wings, some animals have long legs for speed

  5. Special Structures for DEFENSE: 3. Physical features allow an animal to make a direct attack painful or allow the animal to be unpalatable (not taste good) to the predator ex. Horns, claws, quills, stingers, shells, coloration

  6. Special Structures for MOVEMENT: Animals have certain structures for movement so that they can go from place to place, find food or escape from predators. ex. Legs, feet, tails,

  7. Special Structures to OBTAIN NEEDED RESOURCES: Filtering adaptations used by filter feeders that consume food suspended in water ex. sponges

  8. Special Structures to OBTAIN NEEDED RESOURCES: Tube shaped mouth parts used by fluid feeders ex. Mosquito and hummingbird

  9. Special Structures to OBTAIN NEEDED RESOURCES: Deposit feeders consume microscopic or decaying organisms in dirt ex. Earth worms and termites

  10. Special Structures to OBTAIN NEEDED RESOURCES: Substrate feeders live in or on their food source ex. Maggots

  11. Special Structures to OBTAIN NEEDED RESOURCES: Bulk-feeders consume large prey, these animals usually have specially adapted body parts; for example, tentacles, pinchers, claws, fangs, expandable stomachs or flexible jaws ex. snakes

  12. Special Structures to OBTAIN NEEDED RESOURCES: Opportunistic-feeders consume food where it is located. Examples of structures for these animals are different shaped beaks; sharp teeth for ripping and tearing of flesh; large rounded teeth for grinding plants; rough tongues for drinking water; or long necks or legs to get food
