  1. EMCal Update Heather Gray for the ALICE-USA Collaboration ALICE Offline Week: 29 June 2004 Gdfsgdfhdh

  2. Introduction • Much progress during the past year on jet and γ-jet analysis • EMCal waiting on decision from the DOE on funding (pending NSAC committee report) • Expected September 2004 • Little dedicated software manpower at present Jet in heavy-ion event 100 GeV pp jet PbPb underlying event + =

  3. EMCal Software Status • Geometry Done • Hits Done • SDigits Done • RecPoints Work in Progress • RecParticles ? • TrackSegments ? • PID ? } = identical to RecPoints for EMCal

  4. Progress Dasf Jet Finding Analysis γ-jet Analysis:The dispersion of clusters for π0’s showing where different analyses will be used Accurate direction reconstruction Isolation cut Jet energy resolution: improves with increasing energy

  5. Recent Changes • Implementation of Birks’ Law • Reduces the large hadronic background • Many bug fixes! 55% of total energy deposited before 30ns 45% of energy deposited after 30ns Neutron tail continues until ~150μs

  6. An interesting observation • Ratio = deposited energy from primaries within EMCal’s fiducial region/deposited energy from primaries outside the fiducial region

  7. An interesting observation Production vertices of particles depositing energy in the EMCal: before 30ns Production vertices of particles depositing energy in the EMCal: after 30ns Significant background from other detectors, notably MUON absorber and TOF/TRD!

  8. Raw Data • Can copy PHOS structure as a first approximation • On hold until September when we know the fate of the project • Is this OK?

  9. Conclusions • Much progress in analysis • More results from expected soon • Framework development will be continued once decision on the continuation of the project will be known
