  1. Update on RICH x EMCal Trigger Studies Ben Lillie Outline: • Overview of Local Level 1 trigger • Update on J/ electron triggers • Charged hadron triggers Reed College / RIKEN BNL Research Center

  2. Studies of possible applications of the Local Level 1 trigger • Heavy Flavor Production • Dimitrios Galanakis, Wei Xie • J/ decay • Kenta Shigaki, Ken Oyama, Takashi Matsumoto •  decay • Mike Bick • single charged π, and charged π pairs • Ben Lillie Reed College / RIKEN BNL Research Center

  3. Trigger layout Trigger studies simulate logic in FPGA on Local Level 1 board. Reed College / RIKEN BNL Research Center

  4. Trigger Logic • ΣEMCal2x2 (jet trigger) • Count of EMCal trigger tiles above the 2x2 (first) threshold • ΣRICH (trigger bias and possible jet trigger) • Count of RICH trigger tiles above threshold. • ΣRICH with separation ( and J/Ψ trigger) • Count of RICH trigger tiles above threshold, requiring a minimum separation between counts. • EMCal2x2 x RICH (e+/- from heavy flavor, J/Ψ, , e-mu) • Require a hit in the EMCal correlated with a hit in the RICH • EMCal4x4 x RICH (e+/- from Drell-Yan and W) • Require a hit in the EMCal using 4x4 tiles correlated with a hit in the RICH • EMCal4x4 x RICH (charged pion trigger) • Require a hit in the RICH and no hits in correlated EMCal tiles. Reed College / RIKEN BNL Research Center

  5. EMCal x RICH Trigger Reed College / RIKEN BNL Research Center

  6. J/Ψ Update • Possible RICH only triggers: 1. - Require 1 RICH trigger tile to fire. 2. - Require 2 RICH trigger tiles to fire. 3. - Require 2 RICH trigger tiles to fire, and that there be a minimum distance between the tiles. 4. - Require 2 RICH trigger tiles to fire, not counting tiles adjacent to other tiles that have fired. Passes all triggers Fails trigger 4 Reed College / RIKEN BNL Research Center

  7. RICH x EMC window efficiency

  8. ΔG Charged pion channel  Reed College / RIKEN BNL Research Center

  9. Transversity pion channel Jet chiral-odd fragmentation function Jet chiral-odd QCD process Proton spin Normal to pion plane Since transversity involves a chirality flip, and QCD preserves chirality, we need a chiral-odd fragmentation function. Jaffe, Tang, Jin - Use two-meson interference. Reed College / RIKEN BNL Research Center

  10. RICH x EMCal window Trigger • Characteristics of a hard pion in PHENIX: • Will leave a signal in the RICH ( p > 3.5 GeV) • Will leave only minimum-ionizing energy in the EMCal • Possible Trigger designs: • RICH • Require one RICH trigger tile to fire. • RICH x EMCal • Require one RICH trigger tile to fire, and none of the corresponding EMCal tiles to fire. • RICH x EMCallow • Require one RICH trigger tile to fire and one of the corresponding EMCal tiles to fire. • RICH x EMCalhigh x EMCallow (window) • Require one RICH trigger tile to fire and one of the corresponding EMCal tiles to be above a low threshold and none of the corresponding tiles to be above a high threshold. Reed College / RIKEN BNL Research Center

  11. RICH x EMC window rejection power High threshold = 1.5 GeV Low threshold = 0.3 GeV Low threshold = 0.0 GeV

  12. RICH x EMC window π+/- pair efficiency, low threshold = 0.3 GeV

  13. EMC Multiplicity Distributions Cut at 0.2 GeV Cut at 0.35 GeV Reed College / RIKEN BNL Research Center

  14. EMC Multiplicity trigger rejection power

  15. EMC Multiplicity trigger π+/- efficiency

  16. Possible z - bias Reed College / RIKEN BNL Research Center

  17. Ejet correlation We want a quantity that correlates well with Ejet. Best candidate: total pion momentum. Reed College / RIKEN BNL Research Center

  18. Further work • Include model calculations of transversity and fragmentation functions • Estimate size of observed asymmetry. • Physics background studies (dilution from other physics processes). • Systematics (detector resolution, biases) • Develop asymmetry analysis program in preparation for real data. Reed College / RIKEN BNL Research Center
