God’s Sense of Humor OR How in the World did I end up Here!?! Working with Medical Students
Birth • I first encountered medicine on the day I was born; • The long tunnel, bright lights, I was forlorn. • How dare that masked man yank me from my safe abode? • I would wail for hours, on him to unload.
Childhood • The fourth of five children in the 40s and 50s: • War babies, happy days, and we weren’t even Catholic! • There wasn’t much money, but boy we had fun— • Except at the health department for sticks in our “buns.”
Small Nuisances • I was healthy during childhood with just common diseases; • Measles, mumps, chicken pox, and sniffles and sneezes. • Back then ol’ doc Nolen would come to the house— • I would shiver and cower as quiet as a mouse!
High School • In the 50s and 60s education was zippy; • Just two maths, one science, English, language and history! • The rest were electives so science I shunned— • Extracurricular was my specialty, I loved to have fun!
College • College requirements were less stressful and hefty; • One math, one science, English, electives and history! • Basic math was sufficient for my ambitions in teaching— • And one semester of biology was just in my reaching!
Time to move on-- • I loved teaching high-school—variety, my penchant: • Grammar, literature, and history, both American and ancient. • But eventually I needed to improve my lot— • So back to school I did go, and a master’s I got.
Teaching & Coaching • I taught a while longer, went from public to private, • I taught and I coached and I really did like it. • I traveled with students all over the state— • They loved to have fun…I could certainly relate!
Adult Health • My health remained good, though there were a few setbacks; • C-spine fusion and cancer and ruptured appendix. • My health care providers were all quite amazing— • Only a few MDeities did set my blood blazing.
God’s Sense of Humor • I still hated science and the world of medicine; • Hospitals and clinics; IVs, needles and medicines. • To enter a field I had always deplored, • Could only have been the joke of the Lord!
Current Occupation • Alas, it did happen…and so here I am; • Coaching med students was never my plan. • But finding I love it, which I guess is my gain; • How amazing to help them through stresses and pain.
Research Question • I want to know more about what makes them tick— • Why do they go through this to treat those who are sick? • So many long hours with so little sleep; • What keeps them going…there is something down deep.
Exploration • What is it that’s in there…what on earth are they thinking? • If I had to do it, it would drive me to drinking! • Perhaps I can find out and we’ll be better for it… • At least that’s my goal, so I will have to explore it.
Outcomes • I think I will find their thinking unusual; • They don’t expect handouts, spoon-feeding or Muses. • They seem to be critical, analytical…far from lazy: • And though they don’t sleep much, • They seldom are hazy.
Outcomes • They face the curricula with undaunted finesse… • They stand head and shoulders above all the rest. • But are they confident, self-assured as they seem? • Or do they display that to accomplish their dream?
Outcomes • And do they think asking for help is a crime? • It seems that they do, but it’s just a short time • Before they are needing the help of their colleagues… • After all, it’s not child’s play, but rather the big leagues.
Outcomes • These questions concern me, though I have my opinions; • I can’t really know ‘til I talk to the minions. • I think I will find they are caring, altruistic; • So I expect that finding to be realistic.
