Characteristics • Short broad hands • Small oral cavity, results in protruding tongue. • Flat bridge nose • Hyper flexibility • Broad feet • Low set ears, short • Poor muscle tones • Slanting eyes • Heart defects • Susceptible to upper respiratory infections
Key Issues For Social Workers • Know when intervention should start. • Know what programs are going to be most beneficial for the child. • Know what resources are available in your community. • Make sure the child gets on an IEP.

Key Issues For Educators • Learn as much as you can about down syndrome. • Know what learning level the child is at. • Talk with the parents to learn as much as you can about the child. • Divide tasks into more manageable tasks. • Learn about the child’s talents and interests. • Inclusion

Short Term Goals • Focus on the child’s deficits • State targeted deficit area • Achievable in less than one year • State goal in clear, concise language • Contain observable conditions • One for each deficit area • Identify all service providers
Long Term Goals • Living and working independently • Achievable in a year or longer • Appropriate behaviors • Sees the future of the child through the parents and child’s eyes.
