Our philosophy Successful instruction is constant, rigorous, integrated across disciplines, connected to students' prior experiences, engaging, and designed for critical thinking and problem solving that is useful beyond the classroom. We will never believe that our students have learned enough or that they cannot learn more.
Conduct Charts • Each student has a conduct chart to monitor homework and behavior. • This chart is glued in the student’s planner every six-weeks. • Students receive a sticker for the day when they turn in all their work and model good behavior. • Students should ask for a parent signature at the end of the week. • Two teacher signatures results in the loss of Friday Fun.
Homework Procedures • Students are required to write homework in their planners. • All homework is posted on the Wiki and the board in the classroom. • A missing assignment is a signature (a warning). • Students are not allowed to call home for homework.
Bookshares • A copy of the assignment is on the Wiki. • Bookshares include: oral report, written report and visual aid • They are due about every six weeks – September (Biographies)
Reading • Novel based study - Number the Stars • A Long Walk to Water • The Cay - Free choice at the end of the year
Spelling & Vocabulary • We will study Greek & Latin roots. • Each week, students will receive a list of 10 words all with the same root. Throughout the week, students will complete a variety of activities. On Thursday, we will review the definitions. • On Friday, students are responsible for spelling the words correctly and using each word in a sentence. • The word list is posted to the wiki the Friday before they are due.
Mathematics • Extension of skills learned in 4th grade (emphasis on multiplication and division including decimals) • PROBLEM SOLVING STRATEGIES are BIG! • Build stamina for multi-step situations • Point out the math that you and your child encounter everyday • MULTIPLICATION MEMORIZATION IS A MUST
