Tuesdays with Tiffany Reading is Rewarding
Why Do I Read? These are some of the reasons I read this week.
Reason 1: Become an Expert This week I read a lot of information to become an expert on the new English curriculum. The cool thing is you can become an expert on anything: sport stats, fashion, training your pet, building an engine, Titanic, war, zombies, movies, a favorite band…the possibilities are endless. I love learning new things.
Reason 2: Live Dangerously This week I fought against a futuristic government in the book Matched. I got my mouth frozen to a car mirror in Watsons Go to Birmingham – 1963. I was bullied in The Liberation of Gabriel King. I love this reason because I get to do all kinds of things I can’t or wouldn’t do in real life. I like to have the experience without the consequences you get in real life.
Reason 3: Have a Few Laughs I love to laugh, so I like books that make me laugh. I laugh out loud in almost every chapter of The Dangerous Days of Daniel X. I also laughed out loud when dad told Byron it was a good thing he wasn’t that fresh with the mirror so he didn’t get his tongue stuck to the mirror. I love comics, so I have a daily calendar of comics to start my day with a laugh.
Reason 4: See the World This week I read my friend’s blog. She is a teaching in Taiwan for a year, so I get to learn cool things about that country. Another friend is studying for a year in London, so I get to learn about a place I have always wanted to go. I haven’t had the chance to travel very much, but in books I can go anywhere in the world. That is amazing to me.
Reason 5: Travel Through Time This week I went into the future reading The Giver and The Dangerous Days of Daniel X. I traveled into the past while I was researching Civil Rights in 1963. I hope we invent an actual time machine soon, but while I wait, I can use words to take me anywhere in the past or into an imagined future.
Reason 6: Get Some Free Advice I read a health magazine this week and got some free advice from a doctor. His article said that flossing your teeth adds an extra year to your life. The bacteria on your teeth breaks off and gets into your blood stream and causes inflammation and heart disease. I knew I should floss my teeth, but I didn’t know it would make me live longer.
Reason 7: Discover New Interests This week I read an interesting article about sleep. Native Americans use dream catchers to catch your bad dreams. In Guatemala, they tell their worries to worry dolls. They put the dolls under their pillows and sleep well without any worries. I bought a kit to make a dream catcher and bought a kit of worry dolls. I am interested to see if they work.
Reason 8: Find a Cause When I read newspapers and magazines, I always find a cause that I want to help. I read an article about the WalmartFacebook Challenge. I went to the site and voted over and over for SLC. In the newspaper this week, they announced SLC won a million dollars to stop hunger in Utah. This is one of my favorite reasons to read the newspaper. I love making a difference in the world. What causes do you want to get behind?
Reason 9: Escape This is one of my favorite reasons. I love finding a book that makes me forget I am reading and lets me escape into another world. I liked the book Matched so much, I couldn’t put it down. I cried for the characters at the end because they seemed so real. After a bad day or when I am bored, I escape into a good book. I always come back feeling better.
