Roots! Why even bother?
Seriously…why are we studying this? I don’t speak Latin or Greek. • In the core it says that you need to learn how to: • Identify the possible meaning of words. • Use connotative and denotative meanings. • Have grade-level reading skills (which includes vocabulary). • Roots help with that.
Identifying the possible meaning of words: • Let’s start with a simple one. • Surcharge. • Sur - • Charge – Other sur words: surplus, surpass, surface.. Sur = over.
Now a harder one.. • Fractious • Fract • Ous Fract: fraction, fracture, infraction Ous: various, dangerous, glorious Fract (break) + ous (full of) = fractious – full of breaking.
Practice in action. Put your names on your paper. Find five words that have your root. Guess a definition for your root and give it to Miss C. She will then provide the real definition. Take one of your words and break it down by its roots. See if it is more like ‘surcharge’ or ‘fractious’ in how well the definition can be assumed just from its parts. On the opposite side of your page, create a visual or your root word. Include its definition. Present your research to the class. (Less than a minute.)
Connotative and Denotative Exercise: • Face your desk with a partner. Each of your have a piece of paper. When I say a word, you will write or draw what that word means to you. Then you will compare with your partner.
Connotative and Denotative Meanings • Connotative con(together) + notate(write) +ive(condition) = • Denotative de(down) + notate(write) +ive(condition) =
