  1. Listening Guide Stan 0:00 Introduction • The song starts with a slight sounding of a cymbal accompanied by rain and thunder. This synthesis creates a very dark harmony for the introduction, and this harmony ascends as the introduction goes on. • As the introduction develops the pitch gets lighter and then the voices start to go back and forth. • A synthesizer is used to make thunder crash right as it bridges into the chorus.

  2. 1:22 Chorus • The sound of rain pouring continues through the synthesizer as a acoustic guitar accompanied by drums begins in a very slow rhythm with the duration between notes increasing as the rhythm slows down. • The voice is light and gives a feeling of consonance like this song will remain a light hearted and melodic song. • Repetition is used as the vocals of the chorus are repeated along with the rain, guitar and drums in the background.

  3. 2:10 Verse 1 • The volume of the guitar and drums decrease. • The vocals are the dominant sound the listener hears. • The synthesizer is also creating a digital sound that mimics a pencil writing on paper, this gives the feeling that this song is a letter Stan is writing. • Tone of voice is calm

  4. 2:58 Chorus & 3:21 Verse 2 Chorus has same tone and rhythm as the first chorus and remains constant through out song. His voice is angrier and louder giving the impression that Stan is angrier writing this letter to Eminem than the first letter. There is tension building in the vocals as the volume of his voice continues to increase. Guitar, drums and synthesizer all remain constant

  5. 4:35 Chorus 5:01 Verse 3 • There is always resolution when the chorus takes back over as the voice in the chorus is intended to be harmonic and give a feeling of consonance. • At the very end of this chorus there is an emphasis on a digitally synthesized effect of thunder crashing. • The vocal pitch has increased to the point where Stan is shouting now. • The tempo and the pulse of the guitar and drums remain constant. • The harmony of the guitar and drums remains constant until they fade out at the end of the verse.

  6. 6:10 Bridge This bridge is made by a digital synthesizer recreating the sound of a car crashing with very loud volume

  7. 6:24 Chorus The balance and tempo remains constant with the previous choruses with a return back to a feeling of consonance. The acoustic guitar, drums, bass, and rain effect all come back in at the same rhythm they did in previous choruses. This chorus is a complete contrast to the feeling of the vocals.

  8. 6:47 Verse 4 This verses guitar and drums are in the same form as the previous verses along with the paper and pencil effect. The tone of the vocals in this verse is much more calm and harmonic giving a more positive feeling to this letter. There is a feeling of consonance and harmony in this verse. A digital effect of thunder crashing is accompanied by silence and a quiet effect of rain pouring to end the song.

  9. The Real Slim Shady 0:00 Introduction • The song immediately starts with an electronic chord effect that is homophonic. • A voice accompanies the chord effect and both are at a high volume, but the voice is the dominant sound.

  10. 0:18 Verse 1 The rhythm and tempo of the chord effect remains the same. Drums also join in at the start of the verse in unison with the synthesized chord effect. He imitates a woman’s voice, and is throwing voice sound effects into the background of the vocals constantly. He uses the silence in the natural rhythm of the beat to help emphasize the background voice effects.

  11. 1:22 Chorus This chorus has the same melodic make up as the previous chorus. Just as in the first chorus he repeats the vocals two times. Rhythm does not change, and the words of the chorus lead right into the next verse.

  12. 1:42 Verse 2 The form remains constant as well as the beat. There is an ascending rhythm by the drum player as the chord effect fades out and he emphasizes his cymbals right as the chorus starts creating an emphasis on the final words of the verse, “the next best thing, but not quite me, cause…”

  13. 2:28 Chorus The rhythm does not change from the rest of the song. There is a great deal of repetition involved in the musical composition of this song creating an emphasis on the vocals and the lyrics. The words of the chorus lead right into the next verse.

  14. 2:46 Verse 3 There is the constant feeling of consonance that continues during the third verse. There is a constant emphasis on the vocals, and the instruments remain a secondary sound. Right as the verse is ending there is a repetition of the previous where the chord effect stops as there is an emphasis on the cymbals by the drums player as the chorus starts in.

  15. 3:31 Chorus 4:10 Fadeout • The rhythm and the tempo of the instruments are in unison and remains the same. • He repeats the vocals of the chorus 4 times at the end of the song. • The first two have the same exact same sound as the previous choruses, but the final two times he recites the chorus there is a flute that accompanies the chord effect and the drums emphasizing the feeling of consonance. • The drums and digital chord effect remain constant as the flute becomes the dominant instrument, although the voice is still the predominant sound. • The voice tells the quote I gave about there being a slim shady in all of us. • All instruments remain in unison and fade out at the same time.
