  2. What is Watergate? • Men associated with President Nixon’s campaign broke into Democratic campaign headquarters (Watergate Hotel) • Committee for the Re-Election of the President(CREEP) • Attempting to steal files and plant listening devices

  3. Effects of Watergate • Uncovered that Nixon had been sabotaging opponents and had planted illegal wiretaps • Nixon denied having wiretaps in his office • Refused to hand over recorded tapes • Prior to impeachment, Nixon resigned as President • First and only President to do so

  4. The Troubled 70s • The peace and love of the 1970s also contained mistrust of the gov’t • Vietnam as a controversial war • A paranoid President who made citizens suspicious of their government • Gave the press authority to scrutinize government further
