2. A. The Revival of Trade • The development of trade fairs and trade centers created an interest in western European trade in the later Middle Ages

The Revival of Trade • Blue Section: Trade at Home and Abroad: Fairs, where merchants could sell and exchange for goods, offered one of the best means for local trade. • In the middle ages, international fairs developed that drew people from great distances. These fairs expanded into cycles, with each city in a region acting as the host in turn.

4. A. Regional trade Routes • One center for such an event was Flanders, which is a part of Belgium and the Netherlands today. • In the northern region, German trading companies joined together in the 1160’s to form what would become the Hanseatic League.

5. B. The Growth of Towns • The growth in trade was linked to the development of towns and cities, especially in northern Italy and its surrounding regions.

6. B. Merchants and the New Middle Class • It has been estimated that 1000 new towns developed in western Europe. The growth of towns was directly related to the expansion of trade. • Merchants and craftspeople had no wish to remain within the feudal system. They wanted to govern themselves. • As time passed, merchants and craftspeople became burghers, or free town citizens, who enjoyed personal freedom.

The Growth of Towns • Establishing Guilds: Merchants and Craftspeople formed groups or associations called guilds. • The basic purpose of a guild was to promote the business and the personal well- being of its members. • Guild members also helped other members and members’ families in times of need.

8. C. Plague and Social Upheaval Main Idea: In the fourteenth century, western Europe suffered a series of disasters, in particular, the plague called the black death.
