Unit 1 – Week 1 Vocab August 26,2013
Equator- (noun) • An imaginary line forming a circle around the Earth; an equal distance from the North and South poles, dividing the Earth into the Northern and Southern hemispheres • Is Mexico or the United States closer to the Equator?
Longitude- (noun) • These lines run vertically around the Earth measuring how far east or west an object is. • The Republic of Portugal lies to the north of the Equator at latitude39º30º
Latitude (noun) • These lines that extend around the Earth horizontally and measure how far north or south an object is from the equator • Latitude and longitude help you find places on a globe to know exactly where someplace is.
Prime Meridian- (Noun) • This imaginary line divides the earth into eastern and western hemispheres. • The Prime Meridian runs through the United Kingdom, France, Spain, western Africa, and Antarctica.
Hemisphere- (Noun) • This line divides Earth's surface into halves-North, South, East and West. • By using the equator and prime meridian, we can divide the world into four hemispheres, north, south, east, and west.
Spatial – (adjective) • the ability to visualize and explain location, distance, direction, relationships, change, and movement over space. • To think spatially is to be confident in using maps and mapping to find a destination.
Sphere ~(noun) • a planet or star in the shape of a circle • If you want to get technical, a sphere is also a round body whose surface is at all points equal distance from the center!
Navigation- (noun) • the ability To plan, record, and control the course and position of ship, plane or car • People use to find their way by looking at the stars….today’s navigation is a little easier!!
