What causes STDs? • Pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites
HIV • Human Immunodeficiency Virus • Flu like symptoms • Weakened immune system • Invades white blood cells called T-cells • If not treated, may progress to AIDS in just 10 years • Transmitted by body fluids: blood, semen, vaginal fluids, breast milk
Behaviors that transmit HIV • Sexual intercourse • Sharing needles • Being born to an HIV+ mother • Receiving HIV+ blood transfusion • Ingesting breast milk from an HIV+ mother
AIDS • Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome • Weakened immune system • Very low T-cell count • IT’S PREVENTABLE!!!!
Ways to prevent HIV and other STDs • Abstinence!!! (Abstain from sexual intercourse) • Abstain from sharing needles • Lifelong monogamy with an uninfected partner
