  1. Manifest Destiny: The Goal That Changed Westward Expansion John Petrolias 1820 1850

  2. What Is Manifest Destiny? • In 1845, John L. O'Sullivan, editor of the Democratic Review, wrote in an article, “It is America’s Manifest Destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions." • It expressed the emotion that led Americans to risk their lives to move to the Far West and establish civilization.

  3. From Phrase to Inspiration • Manifest Destiny, the idea that America was destined to move west, motivated many men and women to migrate west, and dream big. • John L. O’Sullivan’s magazine quote inspired many other noted novelists to comment on this belief. • “We Americans are the peculiar, chosen people--the Israel of our time.”-Herman Melville, an American Novelist.

  4. How Far Should We Go? At the time, the United States was in a land dispute with New Spain over the Texas territory. Manifest Destiny inspired 29-year-old Stephen F. Austin to talk of colonizing Texas as a U.S. state. Not only Texas, but other people talked of owning the entire Pacific Northwest up to the southern border of Alaska. Aggressive nationalists thought of conquering Cuba and Central America.

  5. Main Idea • Aside from controlling large land masses, farmers in the Midwest only wanted to transform the vast plains of Louisiana into fertile farming land and small towns. • Farmers wanted this land to sell their crops to places both east and west of the Louisiana Purchase territory.

  6. Overseas Growth The Government wanted to spread Manifest Destiny overseas, but did not want any other land affiliations in Europe. Overseas wise, the term meant to spread the idea of Democracy overseas to countries under the control of a monarchy, tyranny, or oligarchy. Manifest Destiny, in this case, could also mean the idea of world peace with Democracy being the dominant government in the world.
