Securing Success at GCSE Making a Real Difference!
Tonight’s programme: WALT: Review two key strategies to increase GCSE success. Practise how to plan together and revise successfully. Discuss what helps and what hinders GCSE success
Key Dates • 10th January: Securing Success Workshops. • 15th February: Year 11 Parents Consultation. • 18th February: Complete most coursework. • 28th February: Revision week starts. • 7th March: Mock exams start. • 8th April: Year 11 Results Assembly. • 16th May: Morning: English Language Exam
This works!!! • Plan a revision timetable. • Write down coursework deadlines and exam dates. • Spread your subject revision out over time so that you cover each area several times. • Plan for shorter intensive revision slots: (20min/10min/20min/10min). • On school nights, plan to revise only one or two subjects. • Build in time for relaxation. • Allow some days off, but not in the weeks just before exams. • Plan to revise specific topics or aspects of a subject (based on test results or ELP grades)
Activity 1 Discuss and start a revision plan now with your son/daughter (15 min). QUESTIONS TO REMEMBER: How much time a day? How long on each subject? How many subjects a day? Priority subjects? Identifying what to study in each subject? Shared Learning? Different ways of revising? Other commitments? YOU NEED: A blank revision timetable. Your mock examination calendar and the Exam dates. Some rough paper/pencils/colours
REVIEW of KEY MESSAGES • Set targets to aim for success. • Be prepared to make some sacrifices. • Plan revision at home to link with school. • Have a set time to work. • Keep a balanced life-style. • Strive for, and stay focused on, SUCCESS.
2. Learning for Success Using Visual Tools
Plan for Success • Do you know how you learn best? • Does music help or distract you? • Have you tried making revision cards or brief notes? • Do you use colour to highlight key words in notes or revision books? • Are you using the visual tools to secure your learning?
Activity 2 Using one of the model maps provided, use the “Total Recall” revision technique we have just reviewed. YOU NEED: A model map about “Of Mice and Men”. Step 2 Print-outs to practise the skill explained. Have fun. QUESTIONS TO REMEMBER: How often do you listen to your son/daughter? How do you encourage your son/daughter to produce and organise their subject model maps?
“Over to you…” What methods of planning and revision do you use already, which work for you? What is the biggest obstacle to you and your son/daughter securing success? Discuss now how this may be overcome.
