3. We start with TPRI! The Texas Primary Reading Inventory will be administered three times during this 2010-2011 academic school year. It assesses: Phonemic Awareness, Word reading, Text reading level, Fluency, and Comprehension This will be used to drive reading instruction and to assess growth in reading levels.

4. Sight words Every first grader needs to know 100 sight words. Our first two lists are a review of the 50 Kindergarten sight words. We will be sending home the words we are working on in the homework letter weekly. They should be able to read, spell, and write these words on sight.

5. Language Arts Spring ISD requires first grade L.A.curriculum to include the following instruction to students: Phonics and Word Work (understanding letters and sounds) Writing (Writers Workshop) Guided Reading/Literacy Centers Reading and Comprehension Development and Skills Practice Read-Aloud and journal response to literature Working with poetry

6. Reading All incoming first graders should be on a level 4/D =Which is considered on- grade level reading. (Anything below that, is not on-grade!) Every first grader should be reading on a level I/16 by the end of first grade. (In May, when we test for final text reading levels…)

8. This is an example of an I/16 text, which they should be reading by the end of 1st grade.

Writing Allow students to write words after sounding them out phonetically Examples: Birthday is “brtda” Baby is “babe” Paper is “papr” Cake is “cak” Practice writing dictated sentences such as: The cat can jump from the table to the floor. Examples: It may look like this: The cat can jump frm the tabl to the flor.

12. Math Summary Assessment January and May We will teach and practice how to take these multiple choice tests. Practice pages will be sent home. Review any questions that your student gets wrong.

13. Grading Policy Use of rubrics for significant portion of grading. ---guided reading rubric ….If your child is reading below grade level this grade will result in a failing rubric grade. ---writer’s workshop rubric, math, and science rubric ---due to Spring ISD policy, there is no longer a ”D”. 70-79 is now considered a C. Anything under a 70 is a failing grade.

14. Social Studies Often integrated with Language Arts, we will read and write about topics covered in SS. Scope and Sequence: Celebrate Freedom, Community helpers, Self and Family Awareness, Winter Holidays, African American History, Government, Economics, Texas History, Maps and Inventors.

15. Science Taught daily. Involvement in hands on experiences. Students are graded based on responses in interactive science journals as well as investigations done in class. Topics to be covered include Five Senses, Matter, Energy, Plants, Animal Habitats, Rocks and Soil, Conservation of Resources, Light and Sound, and Weather. We use our Science time as an opportunity for all 1st grade teachers to get to know each 1st grade student by teaching in rotations.

16. Reading Homework The guided reading book that comes home, has been read in the classroom. Please let your child read it to you. No new book will come home until the current book is returned. Lost or damaged books must be replaced. The fee is $5 for each book.

17. Homework Folder It will come home on Monday and is due on Friday. In order to become good writers they must write. Let them spell phonetically. Students should feel comfortable using invented spelling to write a 1-2 sentence "story". Please make sure to return homework folders on Friday.

SRA Technology An online, interactive, subscription-based program that teaches basic computer and technology skills and applications to students in grades PreK through 6 Provides a systematic, sequential elementary computer literacy and keyboarding program Allow students to progress at an individual pace

19. Tribes Agreements 1. Mutual Respect- Treating other students, adults, and school property in a responsible, caring manner. 2. Attentive Listening- Using your ears, eyes, and mind to pay attention and respond appropriately to adults and other students. 3. Participation/Right to Pass- Taking an active role in classroom activities as well as using and respecting the use of another’s right to pass. 4. Appreciations / No Put Downs- Using kind words when speaking to others as well as an appropriate volume.

21. Tribes Folders Sent home every Friday for your review Please take the time to review the comments that are in the folder Sign and return on Monday

22. Cafeteria You are welcome at any time to have lunch with your child and ONE guest. We do expect students to socialize at lunch. That means quiet voices and polite behaviors. However, the last five minutes of lunch are silent minutes. Lights will be off to signal such to students. Any student talking during this time will miss recess.

23. Parent Volunteers We are always looking for parent volunteers to either read or help with special projects. If you have any extra time during the day; and you are willing to sign a background check form- let us know. We would love to have you!
