  1. Sino-German WorkshopFrontiers in QCD 20-23 September 2006 at DESY Albrecht Wagner Albrecht Wagner, Sep 06

  2. Albrecht Wagner, Sep 06

  3. Frontiers in QCD This meeting is a follow-up to a workshop "QCD at High Energies/ Frontiers in QCD", Beijing September 2004 Both meeting are sponsored by Sino-German Center for Science Promotion (jointly founded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the German Research Foundation (DFG)) Meetings want to promote exchange and cooperation between Chinese and German scientists: several of Chinese participants have had prolonged stays in Germany, many of whom at DESY/Univ. Hamburg Albrecht Wagner, Sep 06

  4. Deutsches Elektronen-SynchrotronMember of the Helmholtz Association Mission: Development, construction, operation and scientific exploitation of accelerators Provide access for national and international users Internationally used, nationally funded Research Institute Base-Budget: 165 MEuro (2005) Staff: 1560 in Hamburg and Zeuthen Users: 3000 (1500 from abroad) Programme oriented funding: Five year programme planning, strategic review -> funding Albrecht Wagner, Sep 06

  5. DESY • DESY has a long successful history in three areas of basic science and high tech : • Particle physics (one of 5 laboratories world wide), • Research with X-rays (synchrotron radiation) and • Accelerator development. • These topics stimulate each other and constitute the basis for the future of the laboratory. Exp. & Theor. Particle physics Photon research SR & FEL accelerator development Albrecht Wagner, Sep 06

  6. DESY’s Accelerators • DESY operates today 16 km of accelerators for: • Particle physics • photon science HERA built with major contributions from Italy, France, Poland, China etc. Albrecht Wagner, Sep 06

  7. QCD and DESY DESY (together with the University of Hamburg) has a strong and long track record in QCD: Gluon discovery early studies of QCD in e+e- (e.g. string fragmentation) at PETRA HERA (many aspects of QCD) Theory (Hamburg and Zeuthen) Lattice QCD Future: Working on : LHC (will base in many respects on results from HERA) ILC Albrecht Wagner, Sep 06

  8. How Strong is the Strong Interaction? Unification?? as is derived from structure functions and other measurements s(MZ) = 0.1186  0.0011 (exp.)  0.0050 (th.) Albrecht Wagner, Sep 06

  9. The Inner Structure of the Proton A measure of the density of quarks and gluons in the proton is provided by the Structure Function Knowledge of SFs is of vital importance for LHC physics Albrecht Wagner, Sep 06

  10. Collaboration with China Chinese Institutes engaged at DESY since 1978 • Particle Physics PETRA: IHEP (Beijing) in experiment MARK J (Prof. Ting). HERA accelerator: Chinese Institutes strongly involved in construction of HERA accelerator (~30 persons present at DESY) HERA-B-Experiment: Institute of High Energy Physics (Beijing) Tsinghua University (Beijing) HERMES-ExperimentPeking University (Beijing)University of Science and Technology of China (Hefei) TESLAPeking University (Beijing) Institute of High Energy Physics (Beijing) Tsinghua University (Beijing) Albrecht Wagner, Sep 06

  11. China in the Tesla Technology Collaboration Albrecht Wagner, Sep 06

  12. China and The European XFEL Project • Presently: Preparatory phase (scientific/technical & admin./financial) • 13 countries have signed Memorandum of Understanding for this preparatory phase • Bilateral discussions about concrete participation have started Albrecht Wagner, Sep 06

  13. Summary • Welcome to Germany and DESY • Pleased to have you here, • where a strong Sino-German collaboration has flourished for many years • Where QCD has been and will be studied in many respects I wish you and the Sino-German workshop an exciting week Albrecht Wagner, Sep 06
