  1. Isaac Newton developed threelaws that help us explain the relationship between forces acting on a body and the motion of a body
  2. Newton’s First Law “An object at rest tends to stay at rest until acted on by some external force” Likewise, an object in motion will stay in motion until acted on by another force. This Law can also be known as.. The Law of 75 Kgs 125 Kgs
  3. There are advantages and disadvantages to having a lot of inertia in different sporting situations. With the person beside you: Come up with an example of when a lot of inertia would be an advantage AND when it would be a disadvantage in a sporting situation. How can we apply this law to golf?
  4. Newton’s Second Law “When a force acts upon a mass, the result is acceleration of that mass” This Law can be summarised by an equation
  5. The greater the force, The smaller the mass, when a constant force is applied The mass will accelerate in the direction Consider the situation of a golf swing, How can we apply Newton’s Second Law to produce a more powerful strike??
  6. PROJECTILES!!
  7. Angle of release Determines the flight path of the projectile High angle of release = Longer flight time but less distance Low angle of release = Shorter flight time but more distance
  8. How can this be applied to golf club selection?? Driver and long irons have shallow angle on the club face, driver is angled at 9 degrees, these are designed to get distance. Short irons and wedge have steeply angled club faces, 46 degrees for a wedge and are designed to get height and have stopping ability
  9. Speed of release Speed of release has two components: Vertical velocity Horizontal velocity What are the advantages of having high vertical velocity?? In which sports would this be an advantage? What are the advantages of having high horizontal velocity?? In which sports would this be an advantage??
  10. Height of release Always the same in golf – off the tee.
  11. Spin TOP SPIN – shot will dip suddenly and therefore results in decreased distance. A top spin shot creates a region of high pressure on top of the ball and low pressure below. BACK SPIN– increased distance High pressure is created under the ball with a lower pressure area on the top, causing the ball to float These forces are known as magnus forces or the magnus effect.
  12. Newton’s Third Law “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction” What goes up must come down! Action Force Reaction force These two forces ALWAYS work in pairs
  13. Think about where the ACTION and REACTION forces are on these athletes:
  14. How does this law work with golf??
