  2. South American Slavery • Existed before the transatlantic slave trade • Made up 10 percent of Lisbon’s population • Portugal had the first slave markets • Trade moved from Portugal to Tropical Colonies • Enslaved natives of South America • 1501- First slaves arrive in Hispaniola

  3. North American Slavery • Before the 1790’s, cotton crops weren’t popular • 1793- Cotton gin invented by Eli Whitney • Increased cotton production = increased slave demand • 1808- Congress banned salve imports from Africa

  4. Treatment of Slaves in North America • Brutal, inhumane, and cruel • Whippings and executions were very common • Sold like property • Overly scrutinized for every flaw • Harshest treatment was in Louisiana • Slaves lived in fear of their owners • Massive revolts in Louisiana and the Frontier

Treatment of slaves in South America • Worked in various tasks, blacksmiths, cowboys, etc. • Able to testify in court if mistreated • Treated very humanely to prevent revolt • Could control the sale of their kids • Goal was for slaves to gain freedom • Catholic church encouraged bonds throughout families

  6. The Migration • Slavery expanded westward after the American Revolution • Forced slaves to relocate from the East • Before the Civil War • Slave resistance grew immensely • Increased violence used to gain control • Cotton fields were physically demanding

Indentured what? • Worked for only several years • Had chance of freedom • Supplied food, shelter, clothes • Could be from Europe or Africa • Contract • Never abused • No rebellions • Lifetime sentence • Only a slight chance of freedom • Supplied shelter • Usually from Africa • Treated cruelly • Rebelled • No contract Indentured Servant Slave in North America

  8. Rebellions • Treated with malicious violence • Never went well for the slaves • Owners seemed to always win • Very popular in the Frontier and Louisiana • Rebelled from harsh working conditions • Mostly men who rebelled • Very negative affect all around
