  1. Little Priest Tribal College Our Technology Today and Tomorrow: Presenter: dbales@lptc.bia.edu

  2. Little Priest is Little Now … But Getting Bigger!

  3. Computers Today • Our computer network consists of … • 35 Staff and Faculty computers • 6 Server computers (web, email, file, etc) • 24 Student Lab Computers (3 labs) • Main Lab/Classroom(14), Library(6), Small Lab(4) • 5 Multi-media Classroom computers.

  4. Computers Tomorrow • Future Plans for Additional Computers … • CLC Staff, Faculty computers • Several Staff members will move to CLC • No Additional Staff Computers will be needed • 12 Computers will be purchased for the Learning Lab in the CLC • 1 Multi-media Classroom computer will be added.

  5. Computers Tomorrow • Future Plans for Additional Computers … • Library Computers • 4 new Lab computers • One more PAC (catalog) Computer • 1 Multi-media computer will be added. • Dakota City Educational Center • One Staff Computer • 9 Lab/Classroom Computers • 1 Multi-media Classroom computer will be added.

  6. Network Infrastructure Today • WE have two LANs at the Main Campus … • Our Main LAN is for our Staff, Faculty, & Library • It consists of mostly 100mbt Ethernet • Some 10mbt cards and hubs still need upgraded to 100mbt • Our main LAN has a T1 Internet connection • Courtesy of the BIA • The Student Lab Computers make up our other LAN • This LAN is currently 10mbt • It has a 256K VSAT Satellite Internet Connection • Courtesy of ADEC / EPSCOR (thank you very much)

  7. Network Infrastructure Tomorrow Here At Little Priest Main Campus Both LANs will be upgraded to full 100mbt • All CLC computers will be added to our Staff/Faculty LAN • The Additional Library computers will be added to our Staff/Faculty LAN • Firewall routers will be purchased soon • This will provide improved network security • This will also provide VPN capability for Staff, Faculty, and Students to access the network from home • Our Dakota City Center will also VPN into our main LAN here in Winnebago.

  8. Network Infrastructure Tomorrow • Dakota City Educational Center • A Firewall router will be purchased • This will provide security and VPN • Dakota City will use VPN to connect to the main LAN at Little Priest Main campus in Winnebago. • A Multi-media Cart will be set up to share between the two classrooms there. • Hopefully, a second Multi-media cart will be needed at Dakota City in the not too distant future. We have grant money to pay for this.

  9. Network Infrastructure Tomorrow • Dakota City Educational Center Continued … • We Will utilize a VSAT Satellite for Internet connectivity. • (courtesy of ADEC/EPSCOR) Thanks again. • We will use grant to pay for the monthly recurring Satellite fees. • VPN to the main Winnebago campus will be a big part of this Internet connectivity. • We would like to see our main campus VSAT upgraded to 512k.

  10. Winnavegas Casino • At Winnavegas Casino, the casino provides us with a classroom for training their employees. • We hope to equip that site similar to our Dakota City Educational Center and eventually serve the public. • We currently have 10 computers in the classroom there. • However, they need to be upgraded (P100, 32mg RAM) • We would like to treat the casino classroom like another site. • Many employees at the casino would like to take classes at Little Priest, but don’t want to make that 45 minute drive. • Or they live in Winnebago, but their work schedule prohibits them from taking classes here. Casino classes can be scheduled to suit casino work schedules.

  11. Winnavegas Casino • We may possibly utilize another VSAT Satellite at the casino, or we may need to rely on the casino to obtain a commercial T1. • Either way, students there will be able to VPN into our main Little Priest Network. • Once our Dakota City center is in full swing, we will focus on the Casino site. • Between the two sites, we hope for a significant and much needed FTE increase.

  12. Technology is more than just computers, routers, and wire. Technology is people. Hardworking people …. Like the people of Little Priest When our president is away on travel. The rest of us pitch in to pick up the slack, we go that extra mile! Unidentified Man zzzzz Grassy Knoll Betty Redleaf While The Cat’s away!

  13. People Do Make A Difference • When Dr. Lehrer comes and consults with us on math and science … • That makes a difference • When Randy Ross helps us focus on our Technology goals … • That makes a difference • When Dr. Ballinger reaches out to us and helps us acquire new technology … • That makes a difference

  14. People Make A Difference • Discussions with learned people like Dr. Poley, Dr. Lehrer, Dr. Ballinger, and Randy Ross … • They make a difference • We need and appreciate all the help we can get from people like this … • It makes a difference • People who help us attain grants that to some, may seem small, yet are a huge sum to us … • They make a difference

  15. People Make A Difference • Attending Technology conferences like the one at Ohio State next week … • That makes a difference • Having the opportunity to “network” with people from large Universities … • That makes a difference • This meeting today … • Makes a difference

  16. A few ideas and plans … • James Carville would put it this way … • “It’s the technology, stupid!” • Without technology, higher education is shackled. • One goal is to be able to deliver non-credit and credit courses on site live and over the Internet at the Dakota City center and at the casino. • For some classes, we can utilize H.323 video Conferencing technology. Classes can be live here in Winnebago and delivered over the Internet to the casino or Dakota City. Of course, training for faculty and technical assistance will be necessary.

  17. Other Ideas. • We have been investigating TV / Video based courses that we can customize to suit our needs and deliver to the casino and Dakota City. • The Dallas County Community College District produces excellent video based courses. We plan to use these videos, their pre-designed websites, and our creativity to deliver them in a manner more suitable to our instructors and students. Our hybrid TV Courses will combine Videos, synchronous and asynchronous discussion boards, online learning centers, and email. • We would also like to deliver non-credit Internet based courses for anybody with dial-up Internet access. (Ed2GO)

  18. Outside the Box • With our improved technology that is forthcoming, we will have the tools we need to be creative and to think outside the box. • New Ideas will flourish as instructors, deans, and administrators become trained and accustomed to the new technologies. • Once our early pioneers deliver that first online course, or that first live video-conference course, we will have made that first footprint on the other side of the Digital Divide. • Unfortunately, the Digital Divide is for real on reservations like ours.

  19. Summary Little Priest is small, but we have plans for harmonious growth that suits our style. We need better technology and training so we can pass it along to our students, staff, and faculty. The students are most important. Just because they live on a reservation, should not mean that they have to “settle” for old technology. We see technology as a tool to help us offer more courses and better courses to our students. We are also very appreciative of the people in this room who have helped us improve our technology and thus our college.
