  2. “All members of the Department of Medicine will have a job description that outlines their clinical and academic responsibilities. These job descriptions will serve as the basis for annual performance reviews in the department.”

  3. Each division has been asked to submit their job descriptions • Submitted to date: • Cardiology • Dermatology • Clinical Biochemistry • Hematology • General Internal Medicine • Clinical Epidemiology • Allergy and Clinical Immunology

  4. Broad categories (for most divisions) • Clinician-Teacher • Clinician-Educator • Clinician – Scientist • Medical Scientist • Administrator

  5. When meeting with your faculty: • Determine which category the person is. • May require discussion with the individual • Using your job description for that category, decide what score is appropriate for teaching, research, administrative contributions, and clinical contributions.

  6. Excellence in clinical contribution (6) • Awards for clinical care excellence • Demonstrated evidence of clinical innovation, especially peer review recognized. • Also important for promotion • Taking on higher than normal clinical burden, particularly in regard to unpopular services that are nevertheless essential to the success of the department

  7. Excellence in Teaching (6) • Awards for teaching excellence • Major course and curricular accomplishments • High scores on evaluations by students and residents • Peer review recognition of teaching accomplishments • Publications related to educational methods or curricular development • Leadership of national or international educational organizations

  8. Excellence in Research (6) • Publication productivity, particularly evidence of impact • Success in peer-review grant competition • Awards for research excellence, particularly peer recognition at the national and international levels • Election to a prestigious honour society • Membership on editorial boards, editorial role for international journals • Leadership position in national or international scientific organizations.

  9. Excellence in Administration (6) • Senior role (associate dean, assistant dean, DPS, CTU director, division head) with evidence of positive innovation/impact. • Outside organizations (conference planning, executive of professional bodies, key advisory bodies) with evidence of positive impact. • Positive PULSE evaluations relating to administration/leadership.

  10. Use this opportunity to • Consider whether or not the job descriptions for your division need to be revised. • Discuss with the individual if they wish/need to change categories in short, medium and long term.

  11. Part time vs. full time • In principle, expectations should be adjusted for part time vs. full time status. • In some cases the status may be inappropriate, and you may wish to discuss a change. • We encourage evaluation of part time faculty, although not required for this year.
