Foster in Aspects of the Novel • Argued that works need a mixture of flat and around characters • Flat Characters • Lack depth and complexity • Tend to be caricatures • Defined by a single idea or quality whose essences can be summed up in a sentence • Round Characters • Fully developed • Have complexity and depth associated with real people • Can surprise readers convincingly because they have full-blown personalities
