  2. House Bill 1329 The bill provides McKay Scholarships eligibility beginning in the 2011-2012 school year for students with disabilities for whom an accommodation plan has been issued under Section 504.

  3. BUT… A student is NOT eligible for a McKay Scholarship if he or she has been issued a temporary accommodation plan which is valid for 6 months or less.

  4. Beginning April 1, 2012 SCPS-ESSS must notify parents of students with 504 Accommodation Plans of available McKay Scholarship options by April 1 of each year.

  5. So What’s the BIG DEAL?

  6. For Example If we lose 1 student per school site, the average cost to our district would be $420,000 add McKay scholarships its an additional $600,000 for a total of $1,020,000.00 A small deal to a school— A hugedeal to the district.

  8. All staff must be aware of the new rules on Section 504. • Section 504 is not free—it is costly! • The contact person must be knowledgeable and have leadership skills. • Training! Training! Training! • Words can cost us! • Know who to ask for help or support.

  9. All staff must be aware of the new rules on Section 504. • The parent is not the final say but a member of the team. HOWEVER: When a parent request a Section 504 Evaluation or Plan do not ignore—process the request in a timely manner. • Make sure your team members are updated on a regular basis. • The way you say it sometimes is more important than what you say!

  10. Trainings • The ESSS is providing the following dates to train on updates to Section 504 policies and procedures. • Contacts may choose one of the convenient dates: • August 25, 2011 (ESC-Training Rooms 1&2) • August 30, 2011 (Mellonville Annex Training Room)
