  2. The 10,000’ View

  3. Project Overview • The North Terminal Redevelopment (NTR) Project was a planned 26-gate terminal complex designed to replace the airport’s older Davey, Berry & Smith terminal complex.

  4. Airport Fun Facts • The new facility encompasses 824,000 square feet and is about .75 miles in length or the equivalent of a 160 story building. • There are over 150 communication cabinets distributed between more than 36 telecommunication rooms (Special Systems Rooms).

  5. Fiber Fun Facts • The backbone fiber consists of both single-mode and laser optimized 50mm cables. • There are almost 6000 SC connectors terminating over 500 miles of fiber strands. • Sumitomo Airblown fiber is used for all major backbones. • There are over 50 Siemon 72-port fiber panels in the Main SSR alone!

  6. Network Electronics Fun Facts • In the base building (supporting Wayne County Airport Authority only) there are over 50 Cisco switches providing 2400 ports of powered Ethernet connectivity. • Each switch is connected with redundant fiber connections back to 2 main core switches.

  7. Copper Backbone Fun Facts • There are more than 9000 pairs of copper phone backbone pairs which equates into over 900 miles of copper pairs. • Enough copper pairs to go from the Detroit Metro Airport to the Dallas Airport!

  8. Paging Fun Facts • The paging system has over 1600 speakers throughout the project. • Speakers in the concourse are controlled with ambient sound sensors that adjust the volume based on the background noise. • Select gates utilize IP microphones for local announcements.

  9. The Technology Cabling • End to end Siemon connectivity utilizing MapIT patch panels for all category 6 data connections. • Voice connections are also category 6 and terminate on a Siemon S210 style block. • Over 700,000 feet of high performance Siemon Category 6 4-pair cable has been installed.

  10. The Details! • Fluke test equipment was utilized for certification of both copper and fiber. • iTRACS software was utilized for as-builts and documentation.

  11. Complete Rack to Jack! Typical SSR / Raised Floor

  12. Multi User Flight Information Display (MUFID) • Over 150 displays are utilized to inform the public as to flight schedule and to enhance the service level provided by the airlines. • MUFIDS are used for departure and arrival information in addition to baggage carousel identification. • Each gate has a 40” display for airline information.
