Previously learned… • In your earlier educational experience, you have discussed the following: • Audience • Purpose • Thesis (Main Idea) • Main points
Review • Audience: • The people listening to the speech. • Purpose: • What is the speech designed to do? • Persuade • Inform • Entertain • Comfort
Review • Thesis: • The one MAIN POINT of your speech. • If you could summarize it into one main thought, what would it be? • Main Points: • Major topics addressed in the speech. • They help support the thesis.
Paraphrase, Summary and Critiques What’s the difference?
Summary • You are probably most familiar with this word. • In essence a summary is reviewing the most important parts of a piece of writing, speech, etc. • A summary is generally much shorter than the original text.
Paraphrase • A paraphrase is when you re-phrase writing and write it in your own words. • You do not insert any kind of opinion. • A paraphrase is generally the same length as the original text.
Example: • “There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.” • Peace nor rest will exist until the American Negro receives its basic rights as a citizen. The unrest of revolution will not stop until justice is received.
Critique • A critique expresses your OPINION • Movie “Critics” • “Tangled” • There are some quality moments in this film and overall it’s pretty entertaining. This by no means will go down as a classic Disney animation. It seems like Pixar has filled those shoes and Disney trying to be cool will always land them in a rather “uncool” and just barely watchable position.
