Introduction • Definition of cosmetic fitness • Evolution of perceived attractiveness • Positive effects of cosmetic fitness • Negative effects of cosmetic fitness • Personal opinion
Cosmetic fitness is… Exercise or physical activity to achieve a body that is visually appealing (Larger muscles, well defined abdominals, less fat around waist, etc.)
The perception of attractiveness has changed in comparison to current times.-No toned muscles *(Left) Women in swimsuits in the 1950s; (Right) Lee Majors in 1960s/1970s;
Positive Effects Positive self and body image can be obtained through cosmetic fitness. As active lifestyles increase, our society’s health will improve. Cosmetic fitness…can be a positive addition to the overall fitness movement.(Sidentop & van der Mars, 2012, p. 155).
Negative Effects Media images of athletic and toned bodies become the goal for attractiveness Leads to serious behavioral disorders Anorexia Body dysmorphic disorder https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kN_ZT6CZE-8
My opinion on cosmetic fitness… Positive motivator in society Inspires healthy physical activity Encourages confidence in self image Decreases hypokinetic disorders like obesity and Type 2 Diabetes.
