  4. Needs of Living Things Last lesson we looked at food and the different kinds of food that other animals eat. Today we will be looking at shelter.

  6. Needs of Living Things There are many different kinds of shelters that people all over the world use. Can you think of some? Get your teacher to write some of your ideas on the board.

  13. Needs of Living Things There are lots of different types of houses that people live in. There are also lots of different homes for animals. Lets take a look at the homes for the animals in our book.

  14. Needs of Living Things A koala lives in a eucalypt (gum) tree.

  15. Needs of Living Things While this doesn’t provide much protection from the wind and rain, it does keep the koala safe from predators like dingo’s and foxes.

  16. Needs of Living Things A bandicoot lives in a burrow underground. This provides a warm, dry place to sleep and keeps it safe from predators.

  18. Needs of Living Things These provide a warm dry nest and the small openings protects it from predators at night.

  19. Needs of Living Things An echidna can live in a burrow or even a hollow log. It needs shelter from the rain and wind, but it’s sharp quills are all the protections from predators that it needs.

  21. Needs of Living Things A squirrel glider is nocturnal, which means it’s awake at night, so it requires protection from predators while it sleeps during the daytime.

  22. Needs of Living Things Most animals need some form of shelter or protection. Can you think of some animals that don’t need shelter?

  23. Needs of Living Things BOOKWORK TIME Can you cut out the different types of shelter and match them to each animal? Glue each one to the animal’s page, but be very careful with your glue, you don’t want to stick the pages of your book together. When you have finished that task, you can draw a picture of your home on the back page.
