Welcome Times of Assembly SundayWednesday 9:45 am Bible Study 7:00 pm Bible Study 10:45 am Worship 5:00 pm Worship • Assistive listening devices are available, please ask. • Sermons are available on DVD, VHS & Audio tapes • Free of charge.
Attitudes In Relationships Matthew 7:1-12 [Pg.849] pg. is the page in the red pew bible. If you don’t have your bible please use the red one in front of you.
Attitudes In Relationships • Section contains several self-contained ideas. • They seem disconnected.
Attitudes In Relationships • Thread is attitudes in relationships to... • Our brother, in judging his speck. • Some who are not to be given the pearls of the gospel. • Our Father who will, provide nothing but good things. • To everybody in general, the golden rule. • To our fellow Christians who walk the narrow way. • False prophets, recognize and beware of. • Jesus our Lord whose teaching we are committed to.
To Our Brother (1-5) • Christians’ are not to be a judge. [Luke 18:10 pg.902] • Doesn’t refer to all judging. • Not to suspend our critical faculties. • The Christian is not to be a hypocrite. (3-4) [Romans 2:1-2; 14:4 pg.999] • We are also to be judged. [Rom. 14:10-13; 2 Cor. 5:10 pg.1025] • The Christian is rather to be a merciful.
Towards “Dogs” And “Pigs” • Seems like a very harsh metaphor. • There are people who act like animals. • He has used strong metaphors on others. • Herod Antipas –“That Fox”[Luke 13:32 pg.902] • Pharisees –“Serpents, brood of vipers”[Matt 23:33 pg.849] • Not referring the Gentiles or reprehensible sinners. • “What is Holy” is reference to the temple sacrifices. [Exo 29:33pg.50; Lev.2:3pg.89] • Dogs would gulp it up. • Pointless to teach swine the special value of pearls.
Towards “Dogs” And “Pigs” • This metaphor is a balance. • Jesus warned the twelve. [Matt. 10:16 pg849] • Don’t waste the gospel to the uncaring • Don’t press the indifferent ears. [Rom. 8:7 pg. 999; 1. Cor. 2:14 pg.1012] • Teach those who have “ears”. [Matt.10:11-14;11:15;13:13-14 pg849] • There maybe some you will have to give up on. [Rom.9:1-3 pg999;Acts 13:46-48;18:6]
A Kingdom For the Asking. (7-11) • “Ask and it will be given you…” REALLY? • He is not just reinforcing our need to ask God for our needs. • Not the Aladdin’s lamp for every human desire. • This section is aimed who might despair. • The kingdom of heaven is not for the deserving • But the desiring, seeking, knocking.
A Kingdom For the Asking. (7-11) • “For everyone who asks receives…” EVERYONE? • Everyone is not universal. • Not self-serving hypocrite. • Not the mindless ritualist. • Not the double-minded man. Mat.6:22-24;Jam 1:5-8 • The humble-spirited and pure-hearted.[Mat.5:3-12; Jer. 29:12-13 pg664] • Ask for the good things, “the Holy Spirit”, [Luk. 11:13] • The good things are spiritual.
A Kingdom For the Asking. (7-11) • Have confidence that you have a good Father. • A confidence in seeking kingdom of heaven. • Our desire for the “bread of heaven” will be met. • If we ask for a stone, God will give us bread.
A Kingdom For the Asking. (7-11) , “if it were the case that whatever we ask God was pledged to give, then I for one would never pray again, because I would not have sufficient confidence in my own wisdom to ask God for anything…” Alex Motyer (As quoted by John R.W. Stott in Christian Counter-Culture)
“The Golden Rule”, Make It Real • Most well known, least applied. • Recognized the unique way of Jesus. • Simply a restatement of Leviticus 19:18. • Jesus uses the compelling example of His own love. [John 13:34 pg.938] • Deal with others by beginning with ourselves. • Don’t look at other people and ask what do they deserve. • Ask how would we want to be treated. • Never forget, we love God because He loved us first. [1 John 4:19 pg.1081; Rom. 5:6-8 pg.999]
Attitudes In Our Relationships • Be careful judging people. • Don’t waste the gospel treasure. • Remember to ask for the “good things” • Make the Golden real in your life.
Why Do You Delay? “…Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins…”Acts 2:38
