EU: H5N6 HPAI virus characteristics Genetic analysis by the EU Reference Laboratory for avian influenza have shown that: • European strains can be differentiated from HPAI H5N6 strains associated with zoonotic infection in Asia • They do not carry any virulence markers strongly associated with human infection risk • To date, there are no reported human infections with this particular genetic sub-lineage of H5N6 HPAI
HPAI outbreaks worldwide 01-15/05/2018 Afghanistan (H5), Iraq, Israel, Saudi Arabia (H5N8), Iran (previously H5N1, now H5N8) and West Africa, India (H5N1+H5N8), HK, Taiwan and China (H5N6, H5N2). Korea, Japan (H5N6). In the whole of China a vaccination programme in poultry against H7N9 (zoonotic strain) is implemented since 09/2017. Cases in poultry and humans have dropped, but too early to assess effectiveness.
