  4. Conflict • A struggle between opposing forces or characters in a story

  5. Internal Conflict • A character struggles with opposing forces within a person’s mind (ex. Conscience)

  6. External Conflict • Exists between two people, • Between a person and a force of nature or a machine, • Or between a person and a whole society.

  7. Read • “Following the Drinking Gourd” page 480 in the text.

  8. Know • Some of the songs were code songs • Code song – songs with details that provided runaways with directions, times, and meeting places for their escapes

  9. Follow the Drinking Gourd • A drinking gourd was literally the shell of a vegetable related to the squash or melon, dried and hollowed out for drinking. • It was also the Big Dipper, a group of stars. Two stars in the Bowl of the Big Dipper point to the North Star—and the direction of FREEDOM!

  11. Write • Write an in-class paragraph (ABC/123 BC/123): • TO WHAT EXTENT WERE SLAVES RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN DESTINIES? • Write in ink, inside margins, on the front ONLY, and make corrections by drawing one straight line through the error and rewriting it.
