L.O. To select relevant information about the threats to my endangered species • Open a word document and put your name and class in the header/footer • http://www.arkive.org/western-gorilla/gorilla-gorilla/#text=Threats
Threats – Western gorilla • The decline in gorilla numbers is mainly attributed to the loss and degradation of their forest habitat, which has been relentlessly cleared to make way for agricultural and logging practices, and to the Ebola virus (6). From 1992 to 2007, it is thought that around one third of the total population found in protected areas was killed by this lethal virus (1). Increasingly, the trade in bushmeat is posing more of a threat to the survival of the species and cleared forests are ever more accessible to hunters. The demand for meat has increased from both road labourers and a growing urban market (7). Western gorillas are very susceptible to the illegal bushmeat trade, as gorilla meat is viewed as a symbol of wealth and prestige (8). Male gorillas will actively defend their females and offspring if their group encounters a threat, and this increases their chances of being killed by a hunter (8).

PEE! 1. Write out what you have found out in your own words, use evidence!! One of the biggest threat to Mountain Gorillas is the Ebola Virus which killed 1/3 of Gorillas between 1992 and 2007. Ebola is deadly to humans and Gorillas because it .........., Gorillas can also catch human germs and get diseases which can kill like TB and Scabies. The Gorillas catch these diseases when they steal food from farms and come into contact with humans so the numbers of gorillas are decreasing fast. 2. Google for extra information – e.g. I might Google about the Ebola virus to find out exactly how it kills.
For level 6 • Arrange your paragraphs in order of importance. • Use a linking sentence at the end of one paragraph to the next threat paragraph. What do the causes of your animal becoming endangered have in common?
