Endangered species By Kai
Objective • Understand why and how endangered species are considered global issues. • Understand what we can do to help the endangered species.
Primary reasons for endangerment • Human actions – oil spilling, pollution (leading to global warming), deforestation • Over exploitation • Competition between species • Habitat loss – rainforest, woodland, swamps
Sharks • Considered to be living since 420 million years ago, starting out with 440 different shark species. • There are 360 different shark species classified in this world and 201 of them are considered endangered. • Largest shark is 12 meters, while the smallest is 25cm. http://animals.howstuffworks.com/fish/great-white.htm
Main Reason for sharks known to be an endangered species Overfishing!
For human needs • Almost every part of sharks can be used • Skin used as leather • Teeth for jewelry • Oil in the liver for high grade machine oil • Fins for shark fin soup
Sharks role in human needs and marine ecosystem • Sharks living for a long time – Medication • Maintaining the number of top predators is critical for sustaining healthy oceanic ecosystems. • Controls the number of population in the lower level of the food chain
In conclusion… • Every species plays a key role in maintaining healthy balance in the global ecosystem. • Ways to help endangered species • Protect wild life habitats • Conservation Groups
