What are endangered species? • Species at risk of extinction because of human activity, changes in climate, or changes in predator-prey ratios.
What are some causes? • Poaching • Global Warming • Habitat loss • Disease • Pollution
What are some of the most endangered species? • Great Panda Bear • The Gorilla • Tigers • Certain Shark • Species • Corals
What are some of the most endangered species? • Marine Turtles • Threatened by : • -fisheries impacts • -coastal development • -direct take of turtles and eggs • -pollution • -global warming • Prevented by: • protecting coastal beaches used as nesting sanctuaries • laws protecting sea turtles from harmful fishing practices • having hotel owners keep their lights dim so they do not interrupt the turtle’s nesting seasons.
Polar Bears • Threatened by : -global warming** -oil development** -poaching -food shortage -pollution • Prevented by : -laws protecting polar bears from being harassed, injured or killed -treaties protecting polar bear ecosystems -organizations raising money- Polar Bear Plunge
Endangered Species Act • Protects plant and animal species that are at risk of becoming extinct. • Protection includes: • Restriction on hunting • Restriction on transporting and trading • Develop recovery plans for Endangered and Threatened Species
Endangerment Prevention • Money Donations • Protection Laws • Endanger Species Awareness • Going green, recycling, conserving energy, and protecting the environment!!!!!!!!!!
What is poaching and why does it occur? • Poaching- Any wildlife that is illegally being killed or taken from people of the state or province. Poaching occurs for various reasons: • Animal Trade • Food • Medicine • Jewelry • Fur Clothing
What is being done to stop poaching? • Stopping Poaching! • Poaching laws are in place to minimize the illegal activity of poaching. • Setting up Poachers to get caught • Collecting all information possible if poaching is seen going on: • Names • Physical descriptions/Location • Vehicle descriptions • License plate numbers
