Mission Statement • Strengthening knowledge and capacities on trade and development issues in developing countries through training, networking, e-services, research and academic support
NTTCBinitiatives and programmes • The Virtual Institute: a capacity building initiative which seeks to cooperate with academic institutions so as to support teaching and research on trade, investment and development issues • The course on “Key issues on the international economic agenda”: highlights the links between trade, investment and development, particularly in the specific framework of multilateral negotiations. • TrainForTrade: a training and capacity building programme targeting international trade operators in the public and private sectors.
Virtual Institute = systematic cooperation with universities to strengthen their teaching and research in international economic and development issues Approach Situation: Need to increase knowledge, skills and human resource capacity in developing countries to formulate economic policies and to negotiate internationally Universities: Play a central role in educating decision makers, providing policy advice to governments, disseminating information, promoting dialogue and contributing to civil society
Target population • Ultimate target population • current and futurepolicy makers involved in the formulation, implementation and negotiation of economic policies • civil society with a stake in these issues • Direct target population staff of universities with teaching and research on policy aspects of international economic and development issues
Capacity-building objectives To help universities: Access and customize relevant international knowledge (from UNCTAD, members of the network…) and to integrate it into their regular curricula; Generate their own knowledge and research in the areas of trade, investment and development; Exchange knowledge and cooperate with other members in course development and research.
