Bell Ringer • Parallel Sentences
WFA • Read the questions carefully. • Then read the passage. • Answer the questions on your paper. • Reread the questions and make sure that you are confident with your answer choice. • Click in your answers using your assigned clicker number.
WFA Deconstruction • Let’s look at how we did as a class. • What did we miss? Why did we miss it? What can we do in the future?
Finish Speeches • Use your class created rubric to evaluate persuasive speeches.
Media Center • Check out book. • Book project is due March 20 and 21 during flex day.
On-Demand • English II students are required to take an On-Demand Assessment. • This is an assessment that analyzes your writing for a particular audience and in a particular format
Mode and Form There are two vocabulary terms you need to be familiar with: • Mode: 3 text types – argumentative, informative/explanatory and narrative • Form: the format of the writing- editorial, memoir, friendly letter, and feature article
Kinds of Prompts • You will complete 2 different writing prompts for On-Demand. • Stand Alone Prompt • You will have a choice between 2 prompts • You will have 40 minutes to complete • Passage-Based Prompt • You will have 90 minutes to complete • For English II students: you will complete the 2 prompts in either informative/explanatory or argumentative mode
How to dissect a prompt Remember S.P.A.T. when dissecting a prompt • Situation-what is in the background information • Purpose- why are your writing (inform, persuade, etc) • Audience- to whom are you writing • Task- What form are you supposed to use (letter, article, speech, etc)
Characteristics of the modes • We will focus on argumentative and informative/explanatory modes… • ARGUMENTATIVE • PURPOSE- a reasoned, logical way of demonstrating that the writer’s position, belief, or conclusion is valid. • CHARACTERISTICS- offers facts that support the reasons, provides textual evidence, anticipates and evaluates the consequences of accepting the argument
Characteristics cont. INFORMATIVE/EXPLANATORY • PURPOSE- to inform or explain to audience about a particular topic • CHARACTERISITCS- provide thoughtful and insightful explanation, uses examples and details, uses a variety of approaches (analysis, evaluation, narration, quotes, descriptions, etc)
How is it scored??? • Your writings will be scored using a 4 point rubric assessing the following: • Purpose/focus • Idea development • Structure • Language and conventions
