  11. Emancipation Proclamation • Freed slaves in states that had seceded from the Union • DID NOT free slaves in border states • Emancipation = freedom

Why Were The Border States Important? • Border states were states that were slaves states but had chosen to remain a part of the union • The presence of the states and their display of loyalty to the Union was the main reason Lincoln didn’t talk about slavery initially as the goal of the Civil War • Not only was loyalty important but also their position and location was crucial to the Union as well

  13. Frederick Douglass • Frederick Douglass writes “Men of Color, To Arms!” urging African Americans to join the Army. • “…The case is before you. This is our golden opportunity. Let us accept it, and forever wipe out the dark reproaches unsparingly hurled against us by our enemies. Let us win for ourselves the gratitude of our country, and the best blessings of our posterity through all time…”

  14. Now Is Their Time… • Black soldiers were paid less than white counterparts ($10/month as opposed to $13/month) • 1864: Congress passed a law that black and white soldiers would be paid the same amount

  15. All Blood Runs Red….. • A young black man tends to a wounded white Union soldier • At first, black soldiers were mostly given work as laborers or servants

  16. Bloody Work…. • Blacks routinely received the worst or most tedious jobs • Dug trenches • Collected remains of fallen soldiers from the battlefields

  17. Contraband Goods…. • Former slaves who escaped states in the South to fight on the side of the Union • Some Confederate officers simply killed any African Americans they found in Union uniform

Mass Movement….. • An estimated 200,000 African Americans, mostly escaped slaves, fought in the Union Army and Navy during the Civil War. • The number of African Americans who contributed to the Northern effort with labor, merchandise, money, intelligence, and other services is inestimable, and the value of their toil is incalculable.

  19. Robert Smalls… • A slave forced to serve in Confederate navy • In some cases, having blacks in their ranks worked against the South • Smalls took over his ship and delivered it to Union forces
