Center Area Signs The center area signs should be placed in corresponding areas in the classroom at a level that is easy for young children to see. The signs will assist children with understanding where open center areas are located by matching up the center choice picture (choice board, necklace, or bracelet) with the area sign. Allowing a child to choose an area to play in gives the child the opportunity to do an activity of preference, which may prevent problem behavior. Teachers may also find it useful to cue the children to find the area picture that matches his or her choice. This may ease the transition to the center. For developmentally younger children, a photograph version is easier for the child to understand. Some teachers may want to use the version provided as a model to create their own personalized version by photographing pictures in their environment and enlarging them for easier viewing.
