Objective IWBAT: • Describe the means that citizens use to participate in the political process & analyze influence of demographics on voter turnout, political ideologies, and reapportionment • Analyze political ideology bias on a policy issue College Skills: Group work, annotating skills, (literacy), and analytical skills (critical thinking)
Demography (5mins) Definition: The science/study of human populations. For example: what % of Latino women live in urban areas.
Voting Behavior:In your group, analyze the graphs & charts to complete this part of your study guide. (10mins)
Political Socialization: the process by which you acquire your political beliefs-ideology is learned behavior. Family very influential.
Political Participation: Activities used by citizens to influence political leaders/policies • Conventional: voting, campaign contributions, talking to people, attending a town hall meeting, volunteering to work the polls, etc. (legally bound, personally responsible, participatory) • Unconventional: protest, civil disobedience, art (installations, graffiti, etc.), gorilla gardening, violence, etc. (participatory, justice oriented)
Ideology & Bias 45mins Everyone has bias. Liberals and Conservatives view and present policies through the lenses of their ideology. Your group will receive two different news articles on the same issue…one is liberal, the other conservative. You will have to • Choose your roles (3mins) • Read and annotate your article(s). Answer the Qs from your role’s poster on a separate sheet of paper w/ your name and role. (15 mins) • Share your answers to your role’s Qs with your group (3 mins each) • Discuss the Essential Q: What is the Affordable Care Act? Why are liberals and conservatives so polarized over this issue? Which side do you think is right? Why?
