Technical Advancements: The Cost of Progress? The Titanic Transport by Sea: The Titanic
Lesson Objectives • To understand the technological problems that caused the Titanic to sink. • Use evidence decide which was the most important reason.
Technological Faults • Last lesson we discussed human error and how that led to the tragedy. • This lesson we are going to focus on the technological faults that caused the Titanic to sink.
How did it get from this….. … to this?
Three Technological Arguments There are three key arguments that highlight the technological faults that caused the Titanic to sink. • Materials Used • Manoeuvrability of the ship • “Water-tight” compartments
1. Material used Hull of the ship and the rivets: Reports that the materials used were weak and not of a high standard.
2. Manoeuvrability of the ship Due to the sub-standard rudder and speed that the ship was travelling at the Titanic was unable to move out of the way of the ice-berg.
3. “Watertight” compartments These compartments were designed to be watertight, in fact they simply filled up with water and caused greater damage to the ship.
Investigation • As a class you are going to investigate these three core ideas • You will be put in groups of 4-5 and given an evidence folder • You need to study the evidence and create an argument as to why the cause you have been given is the main reason why the Titanic sank. • You need to be able to present your convincing argument to the class as we will hold a class vote. GOOD LUCK GOOD LUCK
