Who Was Paul Revere? • Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1734 • Son of a French immigrant, Apollos Rivoire • His father came to Massachusetts in search of religious freedom. • Paul’s father changed his name to Paul Revere.

Movements Paul Revere's Ride by William Wadsworth Longfellow • In 1775 Paul made his famous midnight ride. • He heard the British were going to arrest patriot leaders, John Hancock and Samuel Adams. • The British were planning to destroy military supplies in Concord. • Paul was going to warn his fellow patriots. • He set off for Lexington and then Concord. • Before leaving Boston, Paul set up a signal. • One lantern was to be hung in the bell-tower of Christ Church if the British were coming by land. • Two were to be hung if the British were coming by water. This is lantern is at the Concord Museum in Massachusetts.
Movements Continued • Paul made it to Lexington and warned John and Samuel. • Just outside of Lexington, on his way to Concord, Paul was caught by the British. • He was questioned, threatened, and then released without his horse. • Paul had to walk back to Lexington. • The next morning, April 19, 1775, British soldiers marched into Lexington…Patriots stood waiting. • The British ordered them to leave. • Then there was a shot, and the battle at Lexington kicked off the beginning of the Revolutionary War. • A second battle followed in Concord. • By 1783 the thirteen colonies had gained independence. • They formed a new country called the United States of America.
