Purpose of Product Labeling Intended Purpose Inform consumer Manufacturer’s Purpose??? Purpose Make a sale
Caveat Emptor! Buyer Beware! 1990 Nutrition Labeling and Education Act Goal: provide consumer accurate food info. Not perfect. Ever evolving!!!! Freedom of Speech/Press allows false info to pass along as if true (internet/broadcast/articles/pamphlets). False/misleading claims about nutrition in ads/on product labels or packaging is illegal.
Fact or fiction? Tips for online savvy* Ignore the pedigree Forget before/after fotos Avoid ‘free trials’ ‘Review’ web sites- often bogus Disclosure of commissions made? Look for a street address Check for complaints *Nutrition Action Newsletter Dec 2011
Fact or fiction? Where to find help. • Reliable sources • RD or RDN • Parts of product labels • Nutrition Facts Panel • Ingredient list • Be skeptical of other label info
And….read the ingredient list! INGREDIENTS: Milled corn, sugar, enriched flour {reduced iron, wheat starch, pyridoxine hydrocholride, riboflavin (vitamin B6), thiamine hydrochloride (vitamin B1)},corn syrup, molasses, salt, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil (one or more of the following oils coconut, cottonseed or soybean oil), sodium ascorbate and ascorbic acid (vitamin C), niacinamide, zinc oxide , BHT (preservative), annato, folic acid, vitamin D and B-12.
Carbs Gone‘Missing Total Carbohydrate 31 grams • Fiber 0 grams • Sugar 5 grams Explain the 26 missing grams of carbs? FYI: ditto on‘fats’; only sat/trans must be listed
Understanding a Label ……consumer confusion! • It’s all about amount. How much is served? • #1 rules….Ingreds listed in descending order by weight • Health Claims and Structure-Function Claims
Claims ≠ government guarantee a product is healthy, effective, safe, pure or lower in calories. To be fair, two terms do have legal definitions: Healthy Fresh
What do these label terms mean? Label says • Made with • Natural • Lightly sweetened • Low, light, reduced • Free • High in fiber
Don’t Assume Label says You think this means FDA rule • Made with good source of n/a • Natural not processed n/a • Lightly sweetened very little sugar n/a • Low, light, reduced very low amount maybe • Free it has none has very little • High in fiber ≥5 gram/serve natural or added
Understanding a Label Food Additives ARE ingredients! What are the two most commonly used food additives? What are ‘unintended additives’? Jelly Bean Rule Health claims not allowed, even if fortified
Leave No Aisle Unfortified! Addition of one or more vitamins or minerals. Any food can be fortified.
‘Enriched’ Replacement of B-1, B-2, B-3, iron and folate, lost when grains are refined All refined grains must be enriched
‘Enriched’? No, think depleted! Whole grain nutrient loss (i.e.vit, min, fiber, etc.) Heavily processed grain add back some lost nutrients ‘Enriched’ grain
Understanding a Label • COOL Rule • % Daily Value (% DV) allows comparison shopping based on nutrient content of two products
How Much is Enough ???! Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) Avg intake level +huge safety factor needed to prevent deficiency for average, healthy American Label standard is %Daily Value, based on RDA Upper Tolerable Limit (UL)- Intake > UL is dangerous Too much of a good thing, can be bad for us!
More TrickyTerms • Sugar Splitting …..distortssugar content • Sweetened with Fruit Juice……what %? • Contains Whole Grains…… what %? • Organic ≠ healthy
Deceptive Naming Blueberry bits : ( The real deal! e.g. blueberry waffles that have no blueberries.
Good news. Things change!
GoodBetterBest!!!!! Consume more food products that make few, if any claims! Consume more products that need NO ingredient list or Nutrition Facts Panel! In the meantime…….
