Getting Started • Electronic Portfolio- • http://dbonney.weebly.com • A resource that can be used to outline professional and education experience • Used as a tool of professional reflection • I chose Weebly. • Settings- Personal preference is to keep it private • Permission can be granted to those I wish to see it. Table of Contents of Site1. Resume 2. Strengths Finder Survey Results 3. Siena CollegeAgency Report and Presentation Cultural Immersion and Agency ReportCritical Analysis Report 4. Weekly Journals 5. Getting Acquainted • Student population 3,240 students • Approximately equal gender ratio • 89% of students receive financial aid • Prevention programs established throughout campus addressing campus violence. • College works with many outside agencies to develop comprehensive policies that address the needs of the population. • Tuition, state and federal funding and private grants fund the department. • Office is monitored by Board of Directors, College President and has frequent contact with families of students. • Serves as liaison between school and families. • Community has large impact on campus and campus has large impact on community.
Ethical CompetenceProfessional’s Responsibility to the Community and Society and to the Clients • Public Safety officer used victim blaming language in reference to sexual assault • “guys will be guys especially when they are drinking.” • Lacked dignity and respect of students • Addressed officer in training- used the comment as an educational tool • Followed up with supervisor who was present and happy with my solution.
Using Supervision • Freedom to make decisions • Provides guidance • Provides constructive feedback • Does not address an issue they may have in front of peers or subordinates • Present ideas and receive honest feedback • Being self-aware is important
Learning from experience • 1. Gathering Objective Data from Concrete Experiences • A sexual assault was reported on campus. The deans office is responsible for responding and assisting public safety in the investigation. Site Supervisor had to keep info confidential. • 2. Reflecting • I wanted to respond and help the victim • I felt that the deans office was not the appropriate place to respond • I became judgmental and critical • After reflection I realized I was confusing my role at Siena with my role at Unity House • I did not have faith in the team of people I know are great • 3. Identifying Relevant Theory and Knowledge • Knowledge of importance of procedures and policies • Importance of confidentiality of victims • Establish roles and stay within those roles unless it is necessary to fill another.
Learning from experience • 4. Examining Dissonance • I was not at Siena to be a direct service provider • My learning goals are focused on policies and procedures on campus • My instinct to get involved stem from my role at Unity House • My two roles overlapped and I needed to remember my place. • 5. Articulate Learning • As a student I am not responsible for or capable of helping the student. • I could have impacted the victims knowledge of campus assistance • I was there to help educate without my other life I wouldn’t have been tempted. Each role is very close. To enhance learning I need to stay focused. • 6. Developing a Plan • Maximize learning experiences in NEW role • Speak with supervisor to ensure boundaries between roles
Developing Cultural Competence • Diverse group of students • Self proclaimed “Mutt Club” • Important to recognize each persons culture while developing them into a single group which will in the future become part of their culture • My own culture = greatest cultural challenge. I believed because I knew diversity I understood other peoples understanding of their own culture. • Campus needs more awareness and inclusive programing- there are groups and clubs that celebrate cultures but few interact
Writing and Reporting • Developed Brochures- • used for distribution throughout campus, located in bathrooms, gathering rooms and counseling center. • Web Site Materials http://www.siena.edu/pages/7014.asp • Presentations/ Trainings • Public Safety Department • Human Rights Team • Student Conduct Review Board • Freshman Orientation • Conduct written reviews of student leaders presentations • Journals • Meeting minutes Dignity Affirming and protecting the dignity of the individual while pursuing the common good. Community Being a community where we work together in friendship and respect, and where we build a world that is more just, peaceable and humane. Appreciation Appreciating the unique worth of each person and delighting in the diversity within our community
Communicating with Clients • I have had the most contact with the groups and community levels of intervention. • student leaders • other programs in the college • If I were employed full time at Siena I would • incorporate time to work with students on an individual level • assess their personal goals how to use the groups and community levels of intervention to their benefit • One area of strength for me is effective communication • includes active listening • processing the information before I speak. • anyone that could be impacted by a decision is involved as much as possible in the decision making process.
Taking Care of Yourself Stressor Relief • Work full time job that doesn’t end when the shift is over • Internship • Adjunct Professor • Two children ages 9 &7 • Family and household responsibilities • Exercise – avid runner • Communication- talk about stressors with husband/friends • Shut it down when it is time • Natural Optimist
Ending yourInternship • Appreciate Most: • different perspective of service delivery for human services • Regrets: • I will not be in a position to be part of the finalization of projects that I have started • Internal feelings= sadness and relief • In order to continue my growth and education expand my comfort zone, I will need to continue to work with different organizations • Remember each organization has their own agendas and successful collaborations will work to incorporate each
Planning your Career • Short –term goals: • Finish my degree • start looking for a new job • Long-term goals • serve as a board member for a nonprofit human services organizations • Become director CEO of organization • Work in High Education Administration • How do I get there? • Continue developing relationships • Never stop learning • Maintain positive relationships with clients and professionals
