5 Themes of Geography Video • http://video.about.com/geography/Five-Themes-of-Geography.htm
Theme #1: Location • Location can be expressed in two ways: • 1. Absolute location: A specific description of where something is. For example, an address. • 2. Relative location: A general description. For example: North of Long Island.
Theme #2 Place: • This is closely related to location • This refers to the area’s landscape, the features that define the area and make it different from other places. • For example: land, climate, and people
Theme #3: Human-Environment Reaction • Geographers want to understand how people interact with their environment • An area’s environment includes its land, water, climate, plants, and animals • People interact with environment all the time – for example: clear forests to plant crops, level fields to build cities, etc. • Physical environments impact how people live- for example: If you live in a cold region you will wear heavy clothes.
Theme #4: Movement • People are always moving. • Geographers want to know how/why people or moving – for example: people moving their living locations due to a job
Theme #5: Regions • Creating regions makes it easier to compare places. • Comparisons help geographers learn why each place has developed the way it has.
Six Essential Elements • Geographers also use a system of standards and essential elements to study the world. • The World in Spatial Terms • Places and Regions • Physical Systems • Human Systems • Environment and Society • The Uses of Geography • Open up to page 15 in your book.
