Note of Clarification While mental retardation (MR) is still recognized as a clinical diagnosis, in an effort to support the work of self-advocates, the APS SW PA HCQU will be using the terms intellectual and/or developmental disability (I/DD) to replace mental retardation (MR) when feasible.
Objectives • Upon completion of the session the Participant will: • Review Lifesharing initiative and how it effects the dynamics of family systems • Define family systems, roles, rules, and developmental processes • Discuss how Lifesharing can contribute to an everyday life
Goal • Support Lifesharing families in the discovery of Family Systems to include rules, roles and functions of all individuals involved and understand the effect of welcoming another person into the family

Lifesharing Develops into… • Close personal relationships • A home • A family • A support system that promotes an everyday life • Friendship and trust • Opportunities for increased community life
Lifesharing Requirements include… • Familiarization with Chapter 6500 regulations • Twenty four hour yearly training • To include a family systems training • Clearances • License monitoring by Office of Developmental Programs (ODP) under Pennsylvania code chapter 6500 • Monthly monitoring with agency
Family System Theory • Set of knowledge gained by professionals working with families • Family members cannot be understood in isolation from one another
Relationship Circle Strangers People we see often but do not know, i.e., mail man, grocery store clerk Acquaintances Family Co-workers Self Best Friends
Visualizing the Family System Theory • The mobile • Seeks equilibrium • Addition, deletion or movement of one part affects all
Family Roles • Each person has a role within the family system • Assigned • Assumed
Family Rules • Patterns of how a family operates • Each family’s set of rules is unique • Often unspoken • Should be reasonable, explained and understood
Reflecting on Roles and Rules • What roles make the rules? • Who follows the rules? • Are emotions and affection allowed to be displayed? • What are the rules for self expression?
Family Dynamics “Families are viewed as interactive, interdependent and reactive, that is, if something occurs to one member in the family, all members of the system are affected”. Goldenberg & Goldenberg, 2003.
