Students leaving school need • generic employment skills • understanding of work environments • career options (PLP) • pathways to further study • positive attitudes to lifelong learning
Choosing a Career Pathway?? • Realistic expectations & awareness of academic ability • Personal interests identified • Career ideas mapped(Revisit planning in PLP) • Tertiary requirements
What is Tertiary Education ? The word “Tertiary” reflects any training and education that happens after school. In SA it is compulsory to attend school until 17, unless attending an alternative training organisation or in employment.
Tertiary Education can beprovided by a: • University • TAFE • Private Provider • Traineeship and Apprenticeship All of these options better equip young people for the world of work.
Tertiary education can begin in Year 11 by including VET (Vocational Education and Training) • Many options available • AHMPs • TAFE short courses • Other trainers eg. Clipjoint
TAFE Certificate 4 and Diploma/Advanced Diploma • Generally require Cert 3 or Stage 2 SACE completion Certificate 1,2 & 3 • Admission requirements depend on competitiveness of course • Check TAFE website carefully for courses of interest Some courses also have special requirementse.g. interviews, auditions, aptitude tests, portfolios
Traineeships and Apprenticeships • Generally prefer completion of Stage 1 SACE • have basic literacy, numeracy and mechanical reasoning assessments • previous work experience or part time work completed • some students commence ASBA’s (Australian School-Based Apprenticeship) within Stage 1 and 2 studies
University Entrance To be able to “get into” a course at university you must: • complete SACE • obtain a ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) above the “cut off” for that year • complete 4 Stage 2 subjects & the Research Project • meet university subject prerequisites for the course • VET involvement can continue through Workplace Practices subject
Needing Help? • Make an appointment with a member of the Careers Team (Mr Doyle, Mrs Mason, Mrs Gare) or Mrs Sampson • Mr Doyle - VET Manager for information on ASBA’s and off-campus training packages • Better if have met with Mr Doyle (or others) before the formal subject counselling interview • Revisit Career Voyager

Stage 1 Subject Information for2014 Compulsory for SACE • Numeracy (Maths) • Literacy (English) Compulsory at Cornerstone College • Christian Living (2 lessons) • Health & Fitness (2 lessons) • 1 supervised Study lesson
Year 11 English at Cornerstone • Students select 2 themes, one for each semester (same skills & assessments) • Topics: • British literature • Speculative Fiction • Issues in War • American literature • Film Studies (requires an application) • Social Justice • Australian literature
English Pathways • option available for students needing support to meet the SACE literacy requirements • Staff will advise students/families if they recommend this option • Not recommended option if planning to do Year 12 English.
Theme selection in Term 4 in English lesson • Teachers contact parents re Pathways option • Rank the themes in order of preference • Any combination can lead to English Studies or English Communications at Year 12 in 2015
Year 11 Maths options at Cornerstone College • Year 10 to Year 11 transition… Check the different Maths Which Maths do you have the background for? • Maths Studies 1 and 2 • Maths Applications 1 and 2 • Maths for Industry 1 and 2 • Specialist Maths • Must do minimum one semester for SACE
Year 11 Christian Living • 2 lessons per week • 2014 themes will include Decision Making Spiritual Thinking Death & Dying Relationships & Sexuality
Year 11 Vetamorphus– Mr Yeager Requirements: Peer Group-42 hrs. Retreats-3 per year Mentoring-10 hrs. Christian Community -14hrs. Bible Reading/Journaling – 84 entries Ministry – 40hrs. + 16hrs. From Here: Application due August 16th Interview with Pastor Al and Adam Vetamorphus application to be done electronically this year Outcomes: Certificate III in Christian Ministry and Theology 30 SACE points Better understanding of the Christian faith
Year 11 Health & Fitness • Promotes regular physical activity for benefit of health and life • A range of sporting activities including some not experienced in the middle school. • Non-graded assessment of student work in Year 11 with the emphasis on fitness for life • Correct PE uniform is required • 2 lessons per week
Study Lessons One study lesson per week Extra time for completing class work, assessments and revision, and to promote good study habits Supervised for support

How to Achieve The SACE 200 Credits in total 10 credits = one semester length subject 20 credits = one full year subject Year 10 = 10 credits - PLP Year 11 = 100 credits – 10 semester subjects Year 12 = 90 credits – 4.5 full year subjects
SACE Year 10 • Year 10 = 10 credits • Personal Learning Plan = PLP • Compulsory • MUST pass with C grade or better
What if a Year 10 fails PLP? Required to do additional assignments after exams this year and/or Year 11 We will determine when the catch-up PLP class is, so you may find you can’t choose one of your preferred subjects as it clashes with PLP AND you have to do PLP Advice – PASS it THIS year!!
SACE Year 11 Course pattern: • Two units of English [whole year] (20 credits) MUST pass English with C grade or better • One unit of Maths at Stage 1 (10 credits) MUST pass Maths with C grade or better • Any 7 other semester units (70 credits)
For compulsory subjects • Different English & Maths options to help all students meet standards for literacy & numeracy in SACE • Extra catch up for students that don’t meet C grade passes • C grade passes for compulsory elements is a more stringent requirement in SACE than before
Most common reason for not passing not handing up assignments!! • Advice PASS up ALL assignments!!
VET in SACE • SACE can include VET • 70 hours of competence = 10 credits (ie one semester subject equivalent)
VET options Examples • Hairdressing • Plumbing • Electrical • Construction • Animal Studies • Mechanics Lots more options – see Mr Doyle asap
VET options • Require application form • Once accepted, school has to pay fee • Students who drop out will still be charged the course fee • Choose carefully • Discuss with Mr Doyle before your interview please
SACE Year 12 Research Project • Exciting flexible subject • Students research a topic or area of interest • Very broad possibilities • Academic/Hobby/Subject Related • Community or work-related
Research Project • Two options Tertiary (ATAR) & non-tertiary option. • 10 credits (half a subject) • Semester 1 • Compulsory - Min C grade or better • 2/3 of our students have RP grade included in their ATAR to get their best score
Year 12 Subjects • 4 other subjects • Most Year 12 subjects prefer equivalent Year 11 background • Need to plan Year 11 and 12 subjects now • Uni prerequisites in SATAC guide • Need to do your research

How Do I Work Out What Subjects To Do? • Possible Career options • Possible Tertiary pathways – some uni courses have compulsory Year 12 subjects • Preferred subjects • Results from Year 10 (C or better) • Discussions with careers advisors • Keep options open
Planning Work Backwards Step 1: Tertiary, training or career path Do you have to do any prerequisites? Step 2: Stage 2 (Year 12) subjects required to meet these requirements and/or open up the pathway to your career. Step 3: Stage 1 (Year 11) subjects required

Step 3: Make Subject Counselling Interview booking online by 12.00 noon Tuesday August 20 Step 4:Attend Subject Counselling Interview on Wednesday August 21 to formally choose subjects for 2014 Step 5:Receive confirmation of subject choices by beginning of Term 4

Completing the Subject Choice Form • All students complete 2 semesters of English • Choose Maths option for first semester (Maths Studies 1/Maths Applications 1 Maths for Industry 1) • Choose 7 other subjects or VET (including second semester of Maths if desired) • Indicate interest in Vetamorphus or Peer Support
Choosing 7 Electives • Look at recommended background for Year 12 subjects
Investigate prerequisite subjects for University courses (in SATAC Guide) • Follow interests • Consider 2 semesters of Maths – for future options for Uni or jobs. Employers strongly recommend students continue with Maths for all of Year 11.
Community Learning • SACE credits for recognised community courses Examples • CFS courses • Cadets – Army etc • Duke of Ed • Music Exams (Grade 5 up) • Need to apply to get SACE credits – see Mrs Mattsson, bring award certificate
