Overarching term for system of support for all teachers during their first two years teaching with a preliminary credential
Also, the term we use to describe the original support program; aka, support for teachers with Ryan credentials
Also applies to Education Specialist credential holders
5. Overview Induction
Aka, 2042 credential
State required path from preliminary to clear Single or Multiple Subject credentials
6. Terminology Support Provider - Veteran teacher assigned to support new teacher through both years of the BTSA/Induction program. Aka, mentor, confidant, shoulder to cry on, new best friend etc.
Participating Teacher - Teacher participating in BTSA/Induction. Aka PT, new teacher, beginning teacher.
7. How Do I Know Which Credential I Have? Your credential will indicate whether you are required to complete Induction
If you aren�t sure, ask your Support Provider, district HR technician, or San Mateo County BTSA Induction Project staff for assistance
8. If you have an Education Specialist Credential, Level I To complete the FAS-only/BTSA program, you are required to:
Work closely with your Support Provider for two years
Complete the formative assessment process with your Support Provider
You are also required to complete the prescribed university coursework
9. If you have a 2042 Induction Credential You are required to complete the following to be eligible for a clear credential:
Work closely with your Support Provider (SP) for two years
Complete the formative assessment process with your SP
Participate in 18 hours of professional development each year
Submit a portfolio documenting your competence in the Induction Standards

Teaching English Learners
Completed either during Year 1 or 2
Teaching Special Populations
Completed either during Year 1 or 2
11. Induction - Professional Development To meet the 18-hour per year professional development requirement, each PT will select district, COE, and/or project offerings that the PT and Support Provider agree address goals set by the PT
12. District Support for BTSA/Induction Your district provides a Support Provider, release time to observe veteran teachers, district analysis and monitoring of credentials, and many other services to ensure your success in the classroom.
Districts are required by law to contribute at least $2,000 per teacher per year, in addition to state BTSA funding. Most districts spend much more to support their new teachers!

Portfolio review to comply with Induction requirements
14. FAQs My credential is good for five years. Can I wait until my second year of teaching to start Induction?
State funding is restricted to the first two years as teacher of record on a preliminary credential. Teachers who delay starting BTSA/Induction will be responsible for the cost of the program when they are no longer eligible for state funding. The cost of BTSA/Induction is currently $6,069 per year.
15. FAQs I�ve been teaching for several years. Why do I have to do all this?
The state designed Induction to accomplish two objectives:
Induct new teachers into our profession

16. FAQs My preservice program prepared me well for the demands of the classroom. Why do I need to repeat what I�ve already learned?
Preservice preparation provides the foundation and theoretical framework for effective teaching. Induction provides the opportunity to deepen understanding and apply it in everyday practice. Bottom line answer: Because it�s the law!Bottom line answer: Because it�s the law!
17. FAQs Why does the San Mateo County BTSA Induction Project require us to do so much paperwork?
The San Mateo County BTSA Induction Project is a state-approved Induction program, and as such we support you in complying with the requirements to earn your clear credential. Bottom line answer: Because it�s the law!Bottom line answer: Because it�s the law!
18. FAQs What if I don�t like my Support Provider?
Our SPs are chosen for both their effectiveness as classroom teachers and their skill and ability working with adult learners. If your combined best professional efforts cannot resolve the conflict, please contact the San Mateo County BTSA Induction Project Director and we will be happy to work with you to resolve the situation.
