  2. Rules on writing tone marks • Tone marks are written above the main vowels. • The main vowels are in the following order: a=>o=>e=>I=>u=>ü For example, in ao the main volwel is a. In ei the main vowel is e. When i and u are combined into a syllable, the tone mark is written on the second vowel:秋(qiū),岁(suì)
