CHAPTER 12 WIRELESS COMPUTING
DISCOVER WIRELESS COMPUTING OBJECTIVE OUTCOME TO UNDERSTAND THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF WIRELESS COMPUTING WILL BE ABLE TO LIST OUT THE FEATURES OF WIRELESS COMPUTING
1) What are the advantages of Wireless Computing? • Lack of cables, lines & cords • So looks neater • Makes devices easier to install • More flexible
2) Mention the disadvantages of Wireless Computing. • Consumes a great deal of power • Have shorter battery lives • Interruptions from nearby devices can interrupt the communication • Thus inconsistent • Less secure
3) Define Radio Signals & Radio Transceiver. • Wireless devices transmit data and communicate with other devices using radio signals that are beamed from one device to another. • A radio transceiver is a device that can act as both a transmitter and a receiver of radio signals. It is a two-way communication.
WIRELESS PERIPHERALS • TO INPUT DATA- Wireless keyboard, mouse or joystick • TO OUTPUT DATA – Wireless Monitor or Printer
RECAP- QUIZ • Define the term : Be Concise • What do you mean by the term : Do Not Send Flames? • What are the 3 parts of an E-mail Address?
DISCOVER WIRELESS COMPUTING (CONTD) OBJECTIVE OUTCOME TO STUDY ABOUT WIRELESS NETWORKS AND OTHER TECHNOLOGIES. WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE FEATURES OF WIRELESS COMPUTING.
WIRELESS NETWORKS AD HOC INFRASTRUCTURE
1) WHAT IS WIRELESS NETWORK? WHAT ARE ITS TYPES? • A wireless network is a collection of two or more computers that communicate with each other using radio signals. Its of 2 types: Ad Hoc network & Infrastructure network.
WIRELESS INTERNET • Wireless access points have ports to which you can connect a high speed modem. So wireless computers can access internet through access points.
2) WHAT IS WIRELESS HOTSPOT? • It is a location that allows wireless computers to use the location’s Internet connection. Eg Hotels, airports, office.
WIRELESS TECHNOLOGIES • WI-FI( Wireless Fidelity)- [802.11, 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n] • Bluetooth • Cellular • Microwave • Infrared
WIRELESS RANGE • Wireless peripherals like keyboard have range only a few feet. • Wi-Fi has range from 75feet-150feet
WIRELESS SPEED • Measured in Mega Bits Per Second (Mbps) • Range is like: • 11Mbps(802.11b) to • 54Mbps(802.11g) to • 248Mbps(802.11n)
REVISION QSTNS • Mention the advantages & disadvantages of Wireless Computing. • Define Radio Signals & Radio Transceiver. • What is Wireless Internet? • Explain about the range and speed of Wireless Devices.
WIRELESS COMPUTING DEVICES OBJECTIVE OUTCOME To familiarize the wireless computing devices. Will study about the wireless peripherals, handhelds & other devices.
1) What is meant by Wireless Access Point? • It is a device that receives and transmits signals from wireless computer to form a wireless network. • This extends internet access to all the computers on the network.
WIRELESS INPUT • Eg. Keyboard & mouse. • Attaching a USB transceiver to our computer, they can operate within 20-30 feet of the transceiver.
WIRELESS NETWORK ADAPTERS USB PC Card Network Interface Card (NIC) Bluetooth Adapter
OTHER WIRELESS PERIPHERALS • Wireless Print Server • Printers • Monitors • Webcams • Game pads
WIRELESS HANDHELDS This have Wi-Fi or Bluetooth wireless capabilities built in. So can check E-mails & surf web in the hotspots available.
2) What is a Wireless Range Extender? • If our Wireless Access Point is not reaching certain areas of our home or office, then we can use a Range Extender to boost the signals. • This can extend more than double the normal wireless range.
